Hellboy Vs. Darkseid

I have to admit, I wasn't always a big Darkseid fan.  I was not hugely into Jack Kirby's Fourth World tales as a kid, and the biggest impact that the ruler of Apokolips had for me was his appearances taking on The Legion of Super Heroes in the Great Darkness Saga.  What really got me interested was Superman: The Animated Series.  Through the extended story arc there and then continuing in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited,  I finally understood what the big deal was.  It will be interesting to see how he is handled on The Snyder Cut of the Justice League movie.

cover gets Dark & darker. I think D. is in the emotional vampire category for getting a source of strength. Sort of being like a living power ring with despair as your power battery.

How would psycho pirate affect him? How would he do against Nightmare?

For something lighter, how about Johnny Thunder vs. the Thunderbolts?

Hellboy makes for a cute Redhead.

Forget the second stringers. What about Darkseid against Dormammu.

I am also not a big fan of Kirby's Fourth World. I've tried reading them a number of times, but except for Mister Miracle, i just havn't managed to get through the stories. Nice to know I'm not alone *though I admit i am in the minority)

Well I loved Fourth World. Kirby is the King!
This is great. An inspired match. These two fit together seamlessly but I'd never paired them in my imagination until today.
A tough spot, too. But I'm not worried. Hellboy is tougher (even) than he looks.
I'm really looking forward to the Snyder cut - and seeing Darkseid.

The Great Darkness Saga were the first issues I read of the '80s Legion of Superheroes. I arrived in the middle of the series, and it blew me away, with Darksied to me being the most powerful villain in the DC Universe until The Anti-Monitor showed up in Crisis on Infinite Earths. Man, those will always be the glory days of comics reading for me ('81-'87). Solid storytelling seemed to fall apart after that, which is why I switched exclusively to small independent publishers and European graphic novels by the 1990s.

I've got a hardcover copy of "The Great Darkness Saga". Has all the issues in that sequence as well as a couple on either side to give it context. Awesome book. I had quit reading comics by the time it came out in the original magazines but heard so much about it that I had to pick it up when the chance present itself.

As I'm taking a pass on HBO Max, I'll just wait for Zack Snyder's Justice League to become available on DVD or some other venue.

On the other hand, there are indications that Darkseid will be the impetus for the next major Arrowverse crossover. Hopefully it'll be handled better than the Crisis on Infinite Earths finale (which, while entertaining, seemed weak and anticlimactic compared to the previous two crossovers).

As to the Fourth World in general, the comics just didn't grab my attention when they were running, though lately my interest has gotten stronger -- thanks in large part to its use in the DCAU.

As for today's cover, Ross, I think it's one of your better efforts. It's seamless and terrifying, and would grab the attention and interest of even casual Hellboy fans. Even the contrast of the relative angles of the characters' heads (by happy coincidence, since it's obviously not something you had a lot of control over) reflect dominance and despair.

A minor, but important, digression.

My condolences to the family and friends of Jack Delaney in Northwest Connecticut. For almost forty years, he ran "My Mom Threw Mine Away;" the number one comic book and pop culture shop in Litchfield County! Through his extensive contacts and collection, I expanded my eclectic reading tastes to include such now-classic indies as Justice Machine (Comico), FemForce (AC) and The Green Hornet (Now Comics).

He will be sorely missed around here.

Carycomic sorry for the loss.

Didn't Justice Machine have a crossover with the Elementals?

to det_Tober, yes they did have a crossover adventure.....

The formation of Validus by Darkseid in the past from a twin child of Lightning Lad/Saturn Girl AFTER Validus' debut, courtesy of time-travel based kidnapping was kind of cool!

If a Carggian married a Winathian, would that result in sextuplets rather than twins?
