Sub-Mariner and The Phantom

It certainly seems that I am not alone in wanting Namor to come to the MCU.  A quick mention of "undersea explosions" in Avengers: Endgame has led many excited reviewers to speculate that the groundwork for Sub-Mariner has already been laid.  Alas, the Russo Brothers have stated that there was no hidden meaning in that dialogue.  Still, it shows how much interest there is to bringing the Avenging Son to life, hopefully Marvel is taking notice.

Skull Island?! Is the Phantom trying to protect the megafauna of King Kong's home by a method that would geologically devastate Atlantis...again?

I only ask because the Phantom's home base is Skull Cave on the island of Bengalla.

If you want to be accurate, Cary, in the comics it's Bangalla not Bengalla (before the 1970s, called Bengali). And it's on the mainland, not an island. Perhaps you're thinking of a screen adaptation.

Bengali is also the name of the official language of Bangladesh.

Ross, another pip, and I really like the Phantom.

So I think it's time for the ultimate... the Jim Aparo team up of the Phantom and Batman. Oh, it could be the Batman Family and the Defenders of the Earth... but I gotta figure Batman and the Phantom have plenty of art to provide this classic.

And another great cover today too!

Tune In Next Week for FAITH NAMOR or Phantom If Ya' Got'em.

Nope! By the 1970's Charlton era, it was definitely an island. Maybe spelled with two a's instead of one! But, still depicted as an island.

"That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!"

The problem with Namor is he frankly appears to have some mental issues. He has multiple personalities or untreated bipolar (or tri, quat) disorder. It does not help he went from being a villian to a hero repeatedly in comics. Black Adam will have the same kind of issues.

We know comic writers/directors/producers take great liberties in adapting characters to screen but I think Namor will be hard, even harder than Aquaman was. The comics tend to move the characters in direction film does and in general I think this is a bad thing. There are many things in comics which do not translate well to film and to do opposite make comics adapt to film is effectively lobotomizing them.

ELS, you can find a Batman/Phantom 3-parter with all Aparo art on this blog right now.

I don't think Namor would be too concerned with Kong's Skull island, since that's in the Pacific and he's in the Atlantic. However, Earth-STF's Phantom may have his Skull Cave on the island just off the cost of Bangalla, making his hideout even less accessible (whether Charlton did it that way or not). Any rules against two geographic features sharing the same name (I'm not sure there are any IRL) can be circumvented by calling each in its original language.

If the Russos said that there's no hinting at Namor in Avengers: Endgame, well... the theory's bothered me all along, since Wakanda is indicated as being closer to Africa's east coast than its west, making the earthquakes most likely in the Indian ocean. Still, even if some detail that I missed would put the quakes in the Pacific, it could be something that a future director/screenwriter team could use in a future film. There has, after all, been some talk that the antagonist in the Black Panther sequel could be Namor.

And in the movies, as has been planned for Black Adam, Namor can be simply portrayed as an antihero. In comics, several decades of telling stories with the same characters, with frequent changes in writers, will naturally lead to inconsistencies, especially when the characters are in the kind of "grey area" that those two reside in.

I'm also still hoping that there's some way in the future that Patsy Walker can suit up as the Phantom (or, as I prefer, HellPhantom) on this blog. It'd be a tall order, I'd wager, especially with the trunks, though just recoloring her yellow costume into purple might be enough. That would make for a fun chance to team her up with Iron Beetle and/or Green Devil.

Another amalgamation occurred to me while watching the Top 10 Nerd channel on YouTube, and their list of alternate versions of Deadpool. There are several on that list that are amalgamations with other Marvel characters, the craziest being GalactiPool. That made me think that maybe the Merc with a Mouth could be mixed up with our favorite fourth-wall breaker in DC's pages, Ambush Bug. It's BugPool!

The Ghost who walks with the mutant hybrid that swims and flys...covers most bases pretty well. What's with the color changes on the suit & trunks? Looks like a printer really didn't care.

As to Spock ears, without the FF's Torch finding him, how to explain where he's been up to now.... or make him brand new without any history? No Sue Storm ?? Hope they do the back story correctly.

@Bob Greenwade: maybe this particular Skull Island is a semi-artificial replica! Sort of a cross between the erstwhile Hydrobase and the temporarily uprooted Manhattan from "The City Stealers" (MTU v.1/#28, copyright Dec. 1974).

Anonymous 1, Bengali was renamed Denkali in Indian publications of the Phantom to avoid confusion.

another beautiful cover mash-up, Ross....
very well done....
and as always with me, another suggestion....
Prince Namor and Black Adam...
both have black costumes, both tread the line between hero and villian, and both are royalty...
what do you

jack-el said...

Ooops.....
both have pointed ears and at the end i meant to say, what do you think of this idea????

That one is already on the blog, Jack-el

As there has been an all Aparo cover with the Phantom, would you consider an all Sy Barry cover with his Phantom and some of his early work on Captain Comet or Adam Strange?

Uncle Dave Palmer said...

Cary, that explains it. I haven't read many of the Charlton comics and have no idea whether or not they moved the Skull Cave from the Deep Woods in the middle of the jungle to an island (or why they would do that).

The Phantom newspaper strips by Lee Falk, and the modern ones by Tony DePaul currently being published in newspapers and https://www.comicskingdom.com/phantom, always seemed much better written.

They are still being published in comic book format by Frew Publications in Australia and in translation in Scandinavia and other places around the world.

SubMariner and Mr. Spock?

I've noticed that Sub-Mariner's enemy Naga wasn't (in some descriptions on the internet) mentioned as being enabled (by the Serpent Crown) to breathe AIR.

Revisited the Black Adam / Namor cover. A sequel is warranted!

Cool! Never heard about Submariner before, but nice to see the one and only THE PHANTOM again!

Submariner has been published in America nearly as long as the Phantom. Are you in Norway?
