I think that both of these characters serve an important function for the DC and Marvel comics lines. More than just humorous characters, they are very meta and can comment directly on what's going on in the comic book world they operate in. The fact that they seem to know they are comic book characters allows them to react to the various fads and cliches that the genre goes through. As seriously as we fans want our hobby to be taken, there is certainly plenty to parody, and it's good that we have guys like these to help us laugh at ourselves.

Someone ought to tell Deadpool he's not even the only one in the Marvel Universe who breaks the fourth wall-- She-Hulk made it her trademark for a while. When she joined Fantastic Force (a FF spin-off) the other members wondered if she was schizo because she could 'see' the readers and they couldn't. There's also a really early Spider-man story where makes a joke about Irving Forbush to a very confused Molten Man. He then explains to the villain that it's "an inside joke".
If ever there was an opportunity to throw Foxbat into the mix (available art allowing), it would be this. He's a villain (and occasional hero) in the Champions RPG who is a classic loon, convinced that he's a character in a comic book.
Find at least one other character, and preferably two, and you have the makings of a great ad hoc team.

I really miss Ambush Bug! I think, notwithstanding Justice League, that it was Keith Giffen's best written work. I can't remember laughing so hard reading anything like I did with that first mini-series.
