Batman and John Wayne

This cover was a request from my mother, so how could I refuse?  I was happy to do it though, because I am a big fan of John Wayne westerns.  Sure they show their age, but Wayne had an onscreen presence the likes of which we rarely see anymore.  I quite enjoyed the Coen Brother's remake of True Grit, but the original still holds up very well, mostly due to John Wayne's great cranky performance. Another favorite film of his is The Sons of Katie Elder.  Who can forget the classic line, "I ain't gonna hit ya... the Hell I ain't!" right before he lays the smack down on George Kennedy?  Great stuff.

Dave sez,

Very cool cover!
I love John Wayne movies. They don't make 'em that way anymore...

Nice! Two Waynes!
Another possibility is the Batman from Dark Knight Returns with the duke from The Shootist....

Too bad those old licensed celebrity comics relied so much on photo- or painted-covers. Had there been more line-drawn John Wayne comics you might have been able to pair him with the Elseworlds Batman from "The Blue, The Gray and The Bat".

Nice! This one was definitely a surprise.

Mind you, Orson Wells did team up with Superman, so of *course* Batman had to have something cooler...

On a related note, Heritage will be auctioning items from "John Wayne's Personal Property" in October. Some amazing items.

My God, this is one of those "It's so obvious I can't believe nobody thought of it until now" moments. They make for the best mash-ups. Especially the "picking up a rifle" line, it's pretty brilliant.
