Indeed he was. There's an issue of Wizard in which a bunch of then-hot artists "revive" 1980's properties, and McGuiness draws a He-Man and Skeletor battle. In the accompanying text, he explains that he learned to draw from MotU, and that's why his figures look like that.
(This is the same issue that infamously led to the Pat Lee Transformers comics.)
Well, in this case, it looks Hyperion and JJ are going after an Imperial spaceship of the line. Namely, a Star Destroyer of the Mattel line!
Matt-El being an escaped Phantom Zoner working for Palpatine. Hence, Hyperion and JJ being recruited by Rebel Alliance agent Ken-Ner.*

Ed McGuiness is easily one of my top three comic artists. Just below Alex Ross and maybe switching places with Art Adams depending on the day.

As for the teacher, I'm torn between Ralph Hinkley and Granny Goodness.
Linda Lee Danvers might help there with Ralph.
J'onn can make any look he wants. But Clark doesn't have to have massive muscles as the sunlight gives him the strength. Good cover though.
It looks like they are ready compete in the Mr. Olympia body builders competition.
