This would be an interesting match up. Man-Bat has agility and flight at his advantage, while The Abomination has his incredible strength. No matter who wins, it would be cool to see them join forces against The Grandmaster at the end of the story.

Has Man-Bat faced Moon Knight? If he hasn't, he probably should. Moon Knight used to jint the Werewolf by Night, so he'd probably hunt Man-Bat. And let me just say: Man-Bat would be in the right for attacking Moon Knight. I hate monster hunters (unless it's monsters hunting other monsters).
Also, Peter Cannon, Thunderbolt and Iron Fist would be fun. As would Doctor Strange and Ibis the Invincible.
Interesting pairing, Ross. Story-wise, I would've preferred another cover with Man-Bat and the Lizard, but given your text I can see why you'd pick Abomination, and it makes sense. (I still would love to see the Man-Bat/Lizard relationship continued, though.)
On another topic, I saw a recent meme with a photo of Ecto-1 and the Mystery Machine (fan replicas, of course) both stopped at a gas station (with the caption, "How bad does it have to be for both of these to be here?"). That could inspire a cover here, I think -- especially if you also throw in Baby (Dean Winchester's black Impala).
The truly scary thing about this mash-up is that the Grandmaster wouldn't need a champion unless he was having another one of his "chess matches" against someone just as ruthlessly indifferent as he is. Which, in turn, is usually some big-shot super-villain. I wonder, then, if he could finally be going up against...Epoch, Lord of Time!
@carycomic that's a good idea. Yesterday i had an idea for a superhero team consisting of royalty, like a team of kings and queens. But now i think that idea works equally well for this chess theme. One DC King, One Marvel King, One Marvel Queen, One DC Queen, etc.
Reminds me of a cartoon panel I saw where the Mystery Machine team was being questioned by agents Mulder and Scully: "Let's go over this again. You say you know there was a ghost because your DOG told you he saw it?"
Let's see... DC has Chemical King, King Faraday, King Standish, King Savage, and Aquaman, King of the Seven Seas; Queen Hippolyta, Insect Queen, Quantum Queen, Queen Bee, and Oliver Queen.
How about the Gray Sons? Nightwing, Invincible, Icicle & Icestar, and the Golden Age Marvel Boy?
I'd buy that for sixty cents. :-)
I second the motion. :-)
Abomb's skin will minimize Man-Bat's talons. Hulk like skin is going to make Man-Bat a real victim here.
I'd suggest Grandmaster go against Luthor. Since he is next to Brainiac in intelligence and has imagination, how would he do in direct thinking contest?
Not use to working without the pictures here.
@Shamus: Man-Bat and Moon Knight haven't teamed up since STF #968 (Dec. 2014). So maybe Ross can do a sequel for the 10th anniversary...?
Remember my suggestion some time ago of a group of heroes named for variant chess pieces? I could see the Grandmaster using a conventional orthodox set led by T'Challa and Hippolyta, versus the Joker with his array of variant pieces. "Yes, I promised to play by the rules -- but I never said which rules!"
It'd be fun, but I'm not sure how many people would get the reference.
Well, given that you're probably referencing one of Lewis Carroll's "Alice" novels, wouldn't the Queen of Fables make a better opponent for the Grandmaster? With Her Majesty using T'Challa as a black king and Hippolyta as GM's white queen?
The Grandmaster seems like he'd be an ideal chess player against Despero (JLA #1) & the 1980 cover where he played chess against the Martian Manhunter or even the knock off cover with the new Weapons-Master from the early 1990s JLA that had Maxima, B. Gold, etc.
Since the Grandmaster hasn't appeared with any female characters yet maybe a cover with 1 of the Royal Flush Gang teams would give him a break from all of those board games (maybe he got bored with them?). Possible females players the Fem Force or even the Female Furies as possible card game pieces.
^ Also Prof. Fortune, the Luck League (from JLA #153 if my # is right) or the R.F. Gang's old foe the Joker from the mid 70s could play a role in the Grandmaster's card game.
