Nick Fury Vs. The Phantom Stranger

I am eager to hear more about projects like HBO Max's in development Justice League Dark series, becuase DC has such a great stable of occult and mystical-based characters that have largely been untapped in live action until now.  Still, I have heard no word that The Phantom Stranger will be part of that show, or any other upcoming DC project for that matter.  That strikes me as an oversight, He is such a a cool character that could fit in many places in the DCEU.  He would be easily to realize in live action as well, as long as the lighting designers can manage to keep his eyes constantly in shadow!

That's a firm 'maybe?' For the Stranger to be used, DC would have to explain who he is and what he can and can't do. Good luck with that! Showing him from Brave and the Bold might help but don't count on it.
Wonder Woman just fought him and got God to take him off Earth because the writer used the newish origin for the Phantom seeking redemption. He may not even come back to the books for awhile.
Guess he has had too many Nicks to his character. horrible pun, just cookie crumbs.

The best we got was his appearance in the recent Swamp Thing series.

Being a fan of his silver age version, just go back to the good stuff. There was even a real life situation that has his style in it.

But his eyes can light up too. cool.

Hmmmm! Is Nick Fury using silver bullets? Or phantom projectiles from Bgtzl?

This is a shocker of a cover. As a writer, I'd have this happen early in the story, only to have things thrown out of balance as Dr. Strange tries to treat the Phantom Stranger's wounds, and Fury finds his dealing with Ra's al Ghul more and more difficult and filled with weirdness. Not until Fury relents and answers the question that our Anonymous friend above posted does Stephen understand how to treat the Stranger, who is then able to provide the mystical balance that Fury needs to stop Ra's al Ghul's current machination.

As "wrong" as the event is, the work here is wonderful, Ross. It's not quite your best effort, but it's up there, particularly in terms of composition.

As for a live-action version, I think his appearance on the recent Swamp Thing series is the best we're going to get for a while. That said, I think he'd be a good figure to bring in for the next full Arrowverse crossover (the coming season's crossovers are rumored to be only a set of two-show stories).

The recent DCEU movie "Death in the Family" had a few solo shorts, including Agam Strange, Creature Commandos and... the Phantom Stranger. It adapted a story from the 60's.
No need for an explaination of who PS is, he could just... be there.

I like to imagine him as the dimension-hopping son of Batman and Zatanna from an alternate-universe Earth.

@Anon826: I second that emotion! :-D

@my namesake from 8:09 last night---I'd vote for the latter. Probably supplied discourtesy of the Time Trapper. With maybe even "Nick Fury" actually being a Space Phantom exiled from Limbo! Why the murderous imposture?

So, the Phantom Stranger can't warn Uatu about the optical amputation being plotted against the Watcher. Assuming, of course, that little incident is happening in the STFU just a few years after it did in the universe of Marvel Earth-616.

You mean, the story arc where Uatu wound up looking like Nick Fury (eyepatch and all)?
