Wildcat and The X-Men

I have mentioned before that classic Brave and The Bold writer and creator of Metamorpho Bob Haney is a huge inspiration for this blog, given his loose way with continuity and love for oddball team ups.  Haney also really liked to use Wildcat in his stories, and I have to confess that I do as wll.  There's something about Ted Grant that really appeals to me, so I hope folks don't mind that he shows up here as often as he does.

Wildcat punching Colossus? There's your "hard knocks " right there.

I also like Wildcat. His prescence in the JSA is a nice connection to the basic old school fist-to-face heroes that were the standard in the Golden Age especially with so many heavy hitters in the JSA.

Looks like Wildcat finally got through whipping the Silver Age Avengers back into shape (see STF #1281).

Btw: Happy Anniversary! It was exactly seventy issues ago that he and the Golden Age Human Torch took on the Nazi army all by themselves. Probably to rescue Danette "Firebrand" Reilly from the clutches of Baron Zemo and/or Von Strucker.

Very cool covers, on consecutive days back to back. I would purchase these comic books!

Wildcat ... a 'Golden Age' hero who's probably been more popular in modern times than he was back then...
Who can forget JSA #10, 'Raging Cat'?

I am also a big fan of Bob Haney's old Brave and bold stories. He had a remarkable talent for making team-ups like Batman and Sgt. Rock that shouldn't have worked turn out great. I liked his Batman/Wildcat team-ups as well as his Batman/Metal Men team-ups. An especially great story was the one in which a group of terrorists tried to influence the outcome of the narrative by taking artist Jim Aparo hostage! I love the fact that there was no attempt to explain how the terrorists were able to break the fourth wall and interact with the real world comic creators.

I've read how after editor Murray Bolitinoff retired, subsequent editors put pressure on Haney to fall more in line with DC continuity. Eventually, they more or less drove him out. I think this was a big mistake. I also think that these editors really underestimated their readers. Even at the age of twelve or thirteen, I understood that the Batman of Brave and Bold was not exactly the same Batman from Detective Comics or Batman's own title. I understood this, and it didn't bother me. It's a shame that Haney was driven out simply because these younger editors wanted to make DC more like Marvel with its tighter continuity. Perhaps they would have embraced what made DC different from Marvel.

The Brave and the Bold was never the same after Haney left. I wonder what great stories we never got to see because of his premature departure....

I love this, but this really jogged my mind to make this request. I know this is an obvious thing, but I still would love to see a Brave and the Bold featuring Wildcat and the WildC.A.T.S.

I've always loved Wildcat, ever since those old Dollar Comics with new JSA stories. My personal 'Big Three' of the JSA is Jay Garrick, Alan Scott, and Ted Grant (science, magic, and ultimate self-improvement).

I'd replace Green Lantern with either Doctor Fate or the Spectre, but that's just me. Totally agree on Flash and Wildcat!

This is actually a much more natural team-up than you'd think. If Wildcat actually existed in the same universe as the X-Men, you can bet that Professor X would call him in at some point to teach fisticuffs to the students. That'd probably happen with the original crew, though; Wolverine, at least, had some pretty solid combat skills when he joined, and I think Nightcrawler might have as well.

Wildcat has knocked out plenty of tough fellows so I could see him taking down Colossus at least until Colossus learned to defend against his moves. I am sure his solar plexus is vulnerable to being hit if hit at right angle.

Would it not be great to see Wildcat and Captain America in the gym?

Ted Man is the Mystery Man to train the young and not so young to fight. He's been a favorite of mine since All Star Squadron Annual # 1 (maybe a little further back than that). (Number symbol and 1 are seperated to avoid gratuitous hash tagging) along with the All Star Squadron Atom.

Oops I meant Ted Grant not Ted Man.

My hand is up for Wildcat and the WildC.A.T.s.

I'll third the motion, as well. The fact this "Wildcat" is punching out Colossus in organic steel mode makes me think he's a Daemonite poseur!
