Superman and The Rocketeer

Much has been speculated about how Superman will appear once he returns from the dead in Justice League.  Will he have the all black costume from the comics, Will he have a beard?  A mullet?  At any rate, once he ultimately re-dons his classic duds, I hope we see a few changes to reflect the DCEU's proposed less somber tone - brighter colors, an "S" on the cape and a spit curl would be great to see.

Not to mention, the red trunks that help hide the fact that his blue tights might occasonally be _too_ well-named.

The above anonymous poster put his (or her) finger right on the reason that circus acrobats of the early 20th century (on whose outfits Superman's costume was originally modeled) wore those trunks.

I haven't yet seen Batman vs Superman (as of this writing I'm 4th in line for one of my public library's two copies) but I do agree with you on at least the brighter colors, not only for Superman but also for Wonder Woman. Just as Batman is a symbol of justice, Superman is a symbol of hope, and hope should be bright. (I tend to think of Wonder Woman as a symbol of security, so while I really like the costume Gal Gadot's been wearing (for reasons I'll go into the next time the topic comes up) I would prefer things at least a little brighter.

As to this cover, Ross, it's particularly well done. This is one of those covers that looks like a unit piece, done for an actual crossover comic. I would have transposed the two names in Superman's speech (to "Howard Hughes has been secretly collaborating with Lex Luthor!"), but that's a quibble.

You know, it's ironic. But, in the original graphic novel, it was pulp fiction hero "Doc" Savage who invented the rocket pack worn by Cliff Secord! That makes me wonder if Ross will ever have the Man of Bronze meet the Man of Steel.

It'll be a huge battle that ends when they realize they are both named Clark.

@Bob Greenwade: it was K Callan ("Martha Kent" on LOIS AND CLARK: THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN) who--lol!--first put her finger on it. I was just paraphrasing. ---Anonymous the First.

@Anonymous
Superman and Doc Savage meet back in the 90's when DC themed their annuals with a pulp theme. I was only a panel at the end but they still met.

*Savage is about to land the fatal blow on Supes with his kryptonite dagger*

Lois: Clark! No!

Savage: *drops his dagger* WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME?!

:)

Anyway, great cover as always!

@Scott: it wasn't a face-to-face meeting. Just a glorified cameo appearance. A sextet of on-lookers from the shadows in the last panel on the last page.

@Anonymous: I felt the same way about the very first MTU Annual where Spidey "met" Dracula. Suitably creepy story. But, Drac might as well have been making a special guest-appearance in Spidey's parent mag (for all the non-interaction between them)!

@Anonymous #2: I've never been a Doc Savage fan, so I didn't get all the references that Dave Stevens put into the original Rocketeer series. I read the whole thing believing that Howard Hughes did invent the rocket pack, and watched the movie being very impressed at how the adaption was so nearly spot on. I only found out the truth a few years ago.
