The Metal Men and ROM

Mattel recently announced that they are going to open a film division and begin making their own movies based on their various toy lines.  Properties like Barbie, Hot Wheels and Masters of the Universe are being considered for big screen treatment.  I wonder if Parker Brothers would consider taking a look at some of their licenses for movie adaptations.  I don't know if there's an audience for a ROM flick, but I'd sure go see it!

A few years ago, there was talk of a Rom movie. It was part of some shared universe, if I remember correctly, with The Transformers and The Micronauts. But Rom is one of my favorites. I liked that IDW brought him back, but I don't think the sales were that great. Of course, it's hard to best those Marvel stories with Rom.

I'd like to see Marvel get ROM back and feature him in the comics again. His popularity might rise up again, and the way could be paved for him to be in a movie. Maybe he could be part of the MCU, but I would be satisfied with a movie period regardless of the universe that it's in.

Who else here thinks that Rom, as he appeared at Marvel in the past, would have met the "worthiness" requirement to wield Thor's hammer?

Parker Brothers making movies? Take a step up and look at its parent company, Hasbro. They also own Wizards of the Coast (publishers of, among other things, Dungeons and Dragons and Magic: The Gathering); as well as Hasbro Studios, which has produced TV shows, Web series, movies, and other media based on My Little Pony, Transformers, Micronauts, Stretch Armstrong, and even Battleship. They even have another Clue movie in development, though it'll be hard to beat the first one.

And, indeed, as Jerry mentioned, they do have a Rom the Spaceknight film in the works, set to share a universe with G.I. Joe, Micronauts, and others. Zak Penn is signed on to write the script.

I enjoyed the GI JOE movies with Channing Tatum. I've watched all the flicks in the TRANSFORMERS franchise. And I absolutely _loved_ Marvel's version of both them and ROM back in the Eighties! So a feature film version of the latter is definitely guaranteed my viewership in theaters.

Re: today's cover? With Hasbro and IDW having "revealed" that V.E.N.O.M. is basically a splinter faction of C.O.B.R.A. using reverse-engineered Transformer tech, I can see easily understand why Earth-STF's resident counterpart of Rom would be ticked off about Doc Magnus seemingly collaborating with the Dire Wraiths.*

*Unless, of course, he's actually a Dire Wraith, himself! :-O

I love this cover, Ross. And I always thought the Doc Magnus was a little shady,

I always found it ironic that Marvel's Rom comic was far more successful than the toy that inspired it. It also bothers me that I can't get a 6" Marvel Legends Rom action figure because the original Rom action figure bombed.

With the success of Jumanji 2, maybe Hasbro Studios could make a live-action movie based on the 80's Saturday morning cartoon Dungeon and Dragons.

@Anonymous:

It certainly couldn't do any worse than the one that starred the ex-Jimmy Olsen from Season 1 of LOIS & CLARK.

Anonymous said...

@Cary: actually, that mega-flop starred Justin Whalin (who played Jimmy Olsen in Seasons 2-4 of L&C). Michael Landes was Jimmy during Season 1. Which is the same length of time he later starred in the syndicated TV series "Special Unit 2!"

A single self-contained ROM movie done right would be fantastic. His mission is to banish the dire wraiths. Once that is done, he's just another superhero, and further stories wouldn't carry the same heft.

"Self-contained superhero movie" is a bigger contradiction in terms than "honest politician" and "happily married," put together!

Completely off topic I would like to see in Comicbook form a continuation of: Buck Rogers In the 25th Century Season one (Not the silly second season), Man From Atlantis, Space 1999, The 1980 Flash Gordon Motion Picture, and although not a movie or a Comicbook I want to pet a Moose.
