The Marvel Family and The Watcher

As far as I know, The Don Newton-illustrated tales of the Shazam Family that were featured in World's Finest when it was an over-sized Dollar Comic have never been collected.  That's a real shame, because I think is would be a big seller.  The stories are a ton of fun and Newton's artwork was absolutely gorgeous.  There have been many attempts to modernize the look of the world of Shazam over the years, and I feel that those stories were the most successful at that.

I'm lucky enough to have a letter from Beck, which he sent to me in 1988. It's typed, but has his signature at the bottom.

Some great info about Beck and Newton here.

The Don Newton idea is gold. Perhaps when the movie comes out... When I read my old issues now, the Shazam stories are the second ones I read.

While the comics version has been modernized (as you say), ironically director David F. Sandberg has explicitly gone for a more Golden Age look and feel for Shazam!, with the costume in bright colors and a light overall tone. Frankly, if I had a choice between watching either that film or Avengers 4 on the big screen next year, I'd have to flip a coin.

And with all due respect to Marvel, Brie Larson, and others involved with Carol Danvers, to me Billy Batson will always be The Original Captain Marvel.

Who knows, Bob? If Billy's big-budget film debut does well enough, maybe the sequel can feature a remake of the Golden Scorpion serial!*

*Lord knows, they're remaking everything else. :-|

Or Femforce meets Justice Machine...or the Protectors...or the League of Champions.

@Anonymous: I'd prefer to see Cassandra Cain and Marlo Thomas. You could call it..."Batgirl and That Girl."
