Winter Soldier Vs. Red Hood

These characters both made controversial returns to the living.  Both of them had deaths as sidekicks that profoundly affected their mentors.  They both came back as tortured souls that came in conflict with those they once fought beside before getting their act together and becoming forces for good once again.  They would have plenty to talk about at least!

This cover comes about as the result of a suggestion by Barak Blackburn, a Patron of this blog - thanks, Barak!

So, Mr. Blackburn suggested rather than demanded. We must have a discussion on semantics, someday (lol).

Seriously, though: how would these two ever come into conflict with each other? Bucky, perhaps, mistaking Jason Todd's alias for the Joker going back to his much older tricks? Or Jason, perhaps, being tricked by the Chameleon into going after someone out to eradicate the Russian Mob in Gotham City?

Inquiring minds "demand" to know. ;-)

I demanded!

I stand corrected. :-)

Hey, seeing this cover got me to thinking about their similar histories (like you mentioned). Somehow that got me thinking, and I realized that I don't think you've ever used any of the covers from the amalgam series that DC & Marvel put together back in the 90s. Is that something you would ever consider using for Super-Team Family?

One rule I give myself is not to make a crossover out of another crossover, which rules out the Amalgam Characters.

I'd read this book, as long as it had cameos by Batman, Captain America, Nightwing and Falcon.

The return of Bucky as the Winter Soldier made more sense to me. Jason Todd was voted dead by readers so having him come back seemed like a slap in the face. Ah well.
How about Winter Soldier and the Comedian?

Coming back from the dead due to silly vote makes as much as coming back from the dead due to editor interference (i.e. Jim Shooter and Phoenix) or just bad story telling because author could not find a better way to write it (Issue of Avengers where Scarlet Witch kills number of members of team).

@Ross: another rule you follow is never using any of James Bond's alternate identities. ;-D

Great choice this time, Ross! And I second Mike Shirley's suggestion of the Winter Soldier and the Comedian!

I could see the Winter Soldier being ordered to take out the Red Hood by his Russian masters. I could also see him seeing the Hood as an advisory rather than an ally. The Red Hood surprised me because I felt by the time Grant Morrison started using him during his Batman & Robin run the Hood was burnt out and was too far away from the progress he had made since his resurrection. I still think he should have been Hush...it would have been better story wise. Lodell has done a good job with him but the whole thing of ignoring the killer/assassin he had become and being welcomed (with no problems) back to the Batfamily at the start of 52 was lazy.

And I think he made a good pair with Red Arrow but I could not buy the idea of them being friends considering the two never crossed paths until the book came out.

What about when, in his 'Robin' days, Jason was briefly a Titan: Didn't they meet then?
(I know that N52 retconned away the pre-Flashpoint existence of a 'Teen Titans' team, at least for a while, but IIRC the Red Hood/Red Arrow team-up still started before that retcon was decisively said to have been the case and when references suggesting that the team had existed were still being made..)

@Simreeve...I would have to go back and double check but I don't think they did.

I wouldn’t say they palled around but they did meet.

One notable time that comes to mind is in The New Teen Titans (Vol. 2/Baxter format) #20 when Wonder Girl teamed up with the “original” members since the “new” team was in disarray — with Jason Todd as Robin.
