Spider-Man and Shazam! (The Movie!)

The Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer has hit, and while it looks like a lot of fun, it doesn't seem all that different from the Spider-Man films that have come before, with an awkward Peter Parker, Spidey putting his powers to the test and a tech-based villain.  There are enough new elements - Iron Man, web wings and an age appropriate cast - that should help it stand out from the others. I have confident that Marvel has come up with a decent script and it will definitely be a step above The Amazing Spider-Man 2 at least.

Spidey and Cap had a more traditional comic team-up back in STF #1122...

Man I remember watching both these shows, youthful days where have you gone? Back then, while not completely satisfied, I enjoyed and appreciated just having my comic heroes on the screen in live action. Heck, I even liked the made for TV Doctor Strange movie. Watched it recently and despite the low budget fx of the time the story is pretty good. Maybe Peter Hooten's Doctor Strange can appear in the blog sometime Ross, if he hasn't already.

I love these "Live Action" movie adaptations! AWESOME!

I think what concerns me most is that Robert Downey, Jr.'s Tony Stark is featured so heavily in the Spider-Man preview. It's like a buddy team-up movie. like a live action Marvel Team-Up! Maybe they're hoping for the "Iron Man" bump.

Hopefully this Spider-Man has some legs to it...

Yeah, I have to admit: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 (with Ethan Whatsisname) made SPIDER-MAN 3 (with Toby Maguire) look like a nominee for Best Picture Oscar. Heck! Even this (sadly non-existent) TV-movie would've been preferable to ASM2!

Super-Team Fans: Go to gocomics.com and check out today's Dick Tracy strip. Looks like the new story arc will be teaming Tracy with... the Spirit!

Funny thing... I was just about to post that I just saw ASM2 the other day and found it to be not horrible. What complaints I have over it stem mainly from the attempts to "re-imagine" Electro into something far different from his comics persona. This, in fact, was the first time I remember seeing Spidey really seem like a New Yorker.

Maybe my tastes are a bit skewed in favor of even mediocre superhero films; I've seen Batman and Robin.

As to this cover, Ross, I think you've done yet another great job here. I do recall the Shazam! TV show with mixed feelings. As with most TV adaptations of the period, it was seriously re-imagined, though the rest of the package (writing, acting, directing, etc.) helped make up for that disconnect somewhat.

At least we won't get another 'The Scene Where Uncle Ben Dies" Unlike every Batman movie MUST have a "We must watch Bruce watch his parents' deaths" We finally have someone saying "Yes. We know about the spider bite, Great Power Great Responsibility... Check! And we know Uncle Ben is dead and Peter always has that weight. We can move forward. We don't need to linger here."

As for RDJ, price of a shared universe. Yes it is Spidey's movie but we have a mentor of sorts (Don't call him a 'Father figure' Tony has enough of his own issues there) that knows enough about the cost of being a Superhero that he wants Peter to not let it consume his life. That's an angle that has not been there for Peter in his previous outtings on the big screen. And its now not just 'How does EVERYTHING' affect Peter?' but now we have Peter exerting an effect on Tony. Tony in the MCU has allowed being Ironman define him. He doesn't want a kid allowing the costume to define his entire life that way.

I agree with you, Marc. Maybe this newest Spider-sequel will depict Peter having a tremendous influence on Tony. Perhaps through Peter and the now-cougarish Aunt May double-teaming him on his drinking habits (which I presume are due to some kind of current estrangement between him and Pepper).

Oh, I would love to see Bronze Age Spidey and Cap together! Add in Lynda Carter WW and Ferrigno/Bixby Hulk and we've got a team! More, please!

How about Batman'66 meets Capt. Shazam? Perhaps through Billy discovering that Bruce Wayne is his long-lost biological father!*

*Biily Bat's son; get it? LOL!

What is so strange is I can watch the Shazam and Isis shows which were made on 200.00 a show and have great memories of them.
Yet when I watch the Spider Man series I just cringe and shake my head at how terrible it was.....Marvel live action TV has never worked, ever.
