Justice League of America & The Defenders (and more!)

Welcome to STF #1600!  I hope you will indulge a non-cover-related commentary...

The Producers, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Stir Crazy... Gene Wilder starred some of my all time favorite films.  I was sorry to hear that he passed away yesterday.  I loved his performances as well as his relationship with Gilda Radner.  I hope they are reunited out there somewhere right now.  Rest in Peace, Gene Wilder  and thank you for all the laughs.

I like all the JLA is freaking out, except for Black Canary who's obviously thinking "well it's terrible but at least it's not one of the A-list teams that has to die"

Awesome!
Congratulations on another milestone!

I remember well the original Justice League of America cover!

Gene Wilder was an amazing performer. I'd agree. I'd like to think that he and Gilda are finally together again...but then someone pointed out that he managed to find true love again and was married for 25 years when he died yesterday. So it's bittersweet.

I remember his last great masterpiece. It was, in fact, a sadly short-lived detective series on PBS' Masterpiece Theater, circa the late 1990's! Called "Something Wilder," he played Gene Bergman. A Depression-era Broadway director whose wife had been killed by a mugger while their car was stuck in a traffic jam. The killer's still being at large was one of the reasons he became an amateur sleuth-cum-unofficial consultant to the NYPD Homicide Bureau. His powers of observation (honed from years of having to keep an eye on temperamental stage actors during rehearsals) often saving the day for some poor unfortunate victim of a frame-up.

P.S.---Congratulations your 1600th issue, Ross. A JLA/Defenders team-up would never have occurred to me!*

*Let me guess; Felix Faust and Dormammu competing for the Evil Eye of Avalon?

Btw, I loved Gene Wilder's work as well, but he was in the far superior "Willy Wonka", Charlie was the Burton/Depp abomination

Great work!
I am a recent initiate of your blog, and I have to say that I am impressed with the quality and the stick-to-it-tiveness of putting one of these out a day!

I too, will miss Gene. His style will never be matched.

Ross, I love your 100 Page Super Spectacular covers because they remind me of when DC used to publish these masterpieces. It was in these 100 pagers that I first encountered such forgotten heroes as the original Robotman, Johnny Quick, TNT and Dan the Dyna-mite, Captain Triumph and on and on. When I think of how many thousands of pages of great golden age comics DC has sitting in their library gathering dust....

As always, thanks for what you do.

I also have mixed feelings about posts like this. The cover is great, but it's really frustrating that I can't open it and READ THE COMIC!!!

Thanks also from all the anonymous readers.

Verry MUCH agreed.
(I seem to recall suggesting a Stargirl/Squirrel Girl meeting, a while back, so especial thanks from me for including that story here.)

Congratulations on reaching #1600, Russ.
I can hardly wait to see what you'll do for #2000... ^_^

I'll take 1750

Carycomic said...

Do I hear 1625? 1625, anyone? Anyone at all? Bueller?

I'll take 1851, that's 3 teams from earth 616 plus jla from earth one and the all star squadron from earth 2.
3 x 616 + 1 + 2 = 1851
