Batman and Doctor Strange (Retro)
Consider this story to be the secret origin of this blog!
Doctor Strange is the latest Marvel Character I hear rumored for the movie treatment. He does have an interesting origin story and there will be a magical void at the theaters now that Harry Potter has finished his film series, so it could be a good move. Still, the outfit and some of the more mystical villains might be hard to translate faithfully so it could go either way. One thing I know is I hope they go the Robert Downey Jr. route and get an age appropriate seasoned actor for the role and resist the urge to cast some young hip flavor of the moment. I've heard talk of Johnny Depp and I know Patrick Dempsey has expressed interest in the part, but neither of those choices say Stephen Strange to me.

I had heard that recent plans for a Lone Ranger movie with Johnny Depp had been scrapped due to financing. Maybe somebody found out what happened the last time someone was stupid enough to screw around with a character who was created specifically to be a corny period piece. ("Hey, let's do the Jetsons, but we'll have to set it in current times because otherwise no one will be able to relate to it.")
Anyway, I'm hoping Depp didn't already shave off that moustache. At least he'd look right. How about Steve Buscemi? He'd be right for the 'before' portion of the origin, anyway. Other misguided Hollywood choices might include Jay Baruchel, Tom Cruise (just because a character is blond and has an English accent doesn't mean Tom isn't the perfect choice for Hollywood), Keanu Reeves (ditto), Hillary Swank, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Paul Rudd, Vince Vaughn... hey, while we're at it, why not give Adam Sandler a call?
I thought Edward Norton did a wonderful job as a "Dr. Strange-type" character in The Illusionist. You should check it out if you haven't. Granted it takes place in late 18th century Britain. I was very disappointed in how they re-imagined John Constantine with Keanu Reeves. That was just terrible. Personally, I would love to see Marv Wolfman's NIGHTFORCE brought to the big screen.
I would so buy this comic.
There was a comic somewhere that showed that Mister Mxyzptlk and the Impossible Man, were the same person?, creature?, whatever.
How about Jonathan Rhys-Myers as Stephen Strange?
Dave sez,
I would hope they find someone like Robert Downey, Jr. Someone that fits the character, rather than a "vehicle" for a personality like Depp or Dempsey.
I have a hard time believing it would be Edward Norton, since he was just let go from The Hulk for Mark Ruffalo. Although, different directors and creative team could work for Norton. I liked The Incredible Hulk and The Illusionist, so Norton as Stephen Strange doesn't seem so....strange.
I actually think that Liam Neeson would be a good choice, he's older and I could see him in the role. He's not as smiley as Dempsey either. I certainly can't see Depp in the role, he just doesn't scream Doctor Strange to me.
"Can the Dynamic Duo and the Sorcerer Supreme stop their meddling before the space-time continuum is destroyed forever?"
I'm thinking...Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
Hello from the future.
The Ranger made it but died a thousand deaths from the way he was handled.
Fortunately while it did need a Sherlock to solve who should portray Strange, there was one available in the U.K. He was superb.
Bat-Mite was on New Adventures of Batman and Brave & Bold. Well, they tried. Having Emperor Joker done here was ..........death defying?
Maybe next time The IMProbables could take on Galactus. 8-)
