The Defenders and Captain Atom

A leaked final trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day have reportedly confirmed what I was hoping for.  The Savage Hulk will finally be returning to the MCU.  Smart Hulk was fun for one movie, but he never reverted back and has kind of worn out his welcome.  I'm ready for some smashing again.  Hopefully a Thing/Hulk fight will not be too far off.

I'm going to say something, knowing full well in advance that pretty much every other long-time comics fan is going to jump down my throat for it: I've never, ever liked "Smart Hulk," either in the MCU flicks, nor even the much-lauded Peter David Marvel Comics run.

Stan Lee himself stated, on countless occasions, that the Banner/Hulk set-up was his "take" on the tragic Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde dichotomy. The Hulk as anything other than just that -- a tormented (and spectacularly dangerous) monster -- has never made a single lick of sense to me. It is, for me, like a dark supernatural Baby Huey, or Sugar & Spike done in a Frank Miller-esque "Sin City" style; so wildly against the literal core concept -- we're not *supposed* to sympathize with Mr. Hyde, after all -- that the entire thing becomes dangerously unmoored.

Again, I know this makes me a lonely voice of one, against a comics readership that ardently embraced the Peter David Hulk to its collective bosom. I get that, honest. ;) This is just my personal, and admittedly idiosyncratic "thing" re: this character, is all.

Anyway, I feel better getting all of that off my chest. Just pretend I never had this little outburst, shall we? Carry on. ;)

Not entirely alone! I grew up reading the Hulk comics of the 1970's and early Eighties. Where the Hulk was like a terrible two-year old child prodigy. Occasional displays of brilliance. But, still emotionally unpredictable. That's the kind of Hulk Lou Ferrigno played on the live-action CBS series and voiced in the Saturday morning cartoons. And, yes, having him mentally integrated with Banner's awareness was a refreshing change of pace for the first half-dozen phases of the MCU, But, even the mainstream Marvel comics worked in vicious cycles (especially with regard to Tony Stark's steadier love interests). So, something happening whereby the mental connection gets severed won't be totally unexpected.

My guess? It will have something to do with Dr. Doom. Not necessarily, that Ovoid body-swapping trick! But, relatively close.

P.S.---is that Abner "The Beetle" Jenkins working for AIM, pre-Thunderbolts? Or the Fiery-Icer in the Beetle's old suit?

I mostly agree regarding Smart Hulk. It's good as a digression; and only Smart Hulk could've snapped the universe back to normal, or shown his cousin the ropes. I'd like to see more of Hulk as we saw him in Thor: Ragnarok, and then an exploration of Banner's other personalities, such as Joe Fixit, Devil Hulk, and the Maestro.

As for today's cover, I'm surprised to see Hulk in a restraint that actually works! It must have something that keeps him unconscious as well. But also, the bad guy in the foreground looks familiar. Is he just a random genius, or someone I should recognize?

I don't like the "always angry" (even when not showing it) condition that Marvel started attributing to him in BOTH forms: I remember & prefer the 1970s Hulk, as seen in the Defenders, who was very much a gentle giant if not provoked...

"Hopefully a Thing/Hulk finght will not be too far off." I hope you've just coined a new word: "finght". It's a portmanteau of final fight! This will be the deciding fight of all time! ;-)

So I'm not the only one who noted the vague familiarity of the guy with the antennae on his helmet. Very reassuring! :-)
