Red Tornado and Wonder Man

Dinosaurs and apes were frequently featured on the covers of comics of my youth.  It was said that their presence boosted sales. I'm not sure about how true that was, but I will say that as a kid I was drawn to the images.  Sure, we can get realistic looking ape and dino action on the big screen today, but in those days comics were the only place to truly see them in action (and not just men in animal costumes).

WOW!!!!!!!!

If I didn't know better, I'd say you had open-sourced this from the cover of AC's FEMFORCE #1.

The Red Tornado comes from the cover done by Ramona Fradon for the Super Friends # 8 1977. But I guess I only knew Jerry Ordway's works from DC.

Nice cover, but that's not the WONDER MAN I remember. There was the original green and red costume which was pretty cool looking and then the even better "military jacket with jet pack belt" version. When did he start flying around covered in purple energy?

Doesn't Wonder Man look a lot like some drawings of Captain Atom?

@Phil Calle: looks more like Major Force. Maybe even Starbolt of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard!

If dinosaurs and apes are such big sellers, when do we get to see Godzilla on the Planet of the Apes???

@BG: Perhaps when Dark Horse and IDW do it, first?

@BG: perhaps if Dark Horse and IDW do such a crossover, first?

Both Red Tornado and Wonder Man have gone thru several changes and both are good at dying. One of my earliest Marvels is Avengers #9 V1 where you hear how his fists hit like Thor's hammer. Likewise I have first appearance of Red Tornado when he was a faceless android who communicated by some sort of mental ability. Both died very soon and next versions were different (Pretty different to have a face and functioning eyes, nose and mouth). Wonder Man was brought back as a zombie which parallels Red Tornado's body being reassembled and used by the Construct.

Wolfhammer: Kurt Busiek resurrected Wondy from one of his deaths (with some help from the Scarlet Witch) as 'sentient iconic energy' which looked like living Kirby Krackle when he powered up.
