The Avengers on The Planet of the Apes

The current Planet of the Apes franchise is readying a third installment and I hope it keeps up the high standards of the first two films.  I liked how the second movie was so different from the first while still carrying the story along.  The second Avengers film, while a ton of fun, hit a lot of the same story beats as the first and thus didn't feel quite as special.  Hopefully the third will give audiences something they haven't seen before, and with the Russo Brothers at the helm, I am confident it will.

Ah! I see. Grodd changed history so that apes would become the dominant sentient species in a parallel-time line. Clever!

Evidently, you're a fan of Julie Schwartz's old philosophy, which was basically: "You want to increase readership? Put a primate on the cover."

This is two issues in a row with apes on the cover. Is this just a coincidence, or are you monkeying around with us? #BadPunNoCookie

A DC editor in the sixties (I don't think it was Schwartz, but I could be wrong) did an analysis of the covers of issues that sold especially well. He determined that putting any of the following things on a cover resulted in increased sales: a gorilla, a dinosaur, a motorcycle, a fire, someone crying, a purple background, or a caption asking the reader a question. Years later, DC published an issue of Secret Origins with all of them together, just to be funny.

Actually, it was Irwin Donenfeld (son of DC co-founder Harry Donenfeld) who noticed the trend. While it was Julius Schwartz, worried about over-saturating the market, who allegedly limited simian cover art to "one gorilla a month."

I actually bought a few DC back-issues recently just because they had gorillas on the cover.

^_^

But I'm wondering just HOW those Apes were supposed to have triumphed over the Avengers... especially over Thor and Hercules...
Maybe whatever method was used to move the heroes into that reality was actually so stressful that IT knocked them out?

It was probably the same magic mist used by the Troglodytes of Garret Castle to overcome the Avengers, just prior to the now-classic Avengers/Defenders War.*

*I presume it was magic because it managed to even knock out Iron Man (despite his armor's self-contained emergency air supply). Leaving him too weak to even break simple hempen ropes with one flex his electronic muscles!
