The Avengers and The Legion of Super-Heroes (And More!)

I am a huge fan of the 100-Page Giants that DC used to put out in the 70's.  It was cool to see an issue jam packed with multiple stories featuring Superman or The Flash from various eras,  The issues I really loved, though, were the ones that offered a wide variety of characters.  Detective Comics would feature a new Batman story with a classic tale of the Caped Crusader, but then there would be stories featuring characters like The Spectre, Hawkman, The Golden Age Green Lantern, Kid Eternity. Elongated Man and more.  Each issue was like a mini tour of the DC universe.

Happy 1300 - I so enjoy these 100 page spectaculars. They remind me of being a kid in the 70's when these gems would hit the newsstands.

Thanks, Martin!

I want to read this comic. I REALLY want to read this comic...

I agree with you and Simreeve, Ross. The Golden and Silver Ages were the best.

Btw: Capt. Shazam vs. (a doubtlessly Mr. Mind-controlled) Gladiator?

My money's on the former. ;-D

Congratulations on 1300 issues!
Good times. I was hooked on Adventure Comics an later World's Finest.

Congrats on 1300!! I agree, the 100-pagers were the best! I liked the Batman and World's Finest, new stories with some interesting Golden Age stories, including some characters I never heard of, and all in one book! This certainly is one I'd buy and enjoy, Legion were always good for solid stories, and with Avengers would be great. Nightwing and Daredevil would also be good, though I was raised on Dick Grayson as Robin, Boy/Teen Wonder!

There's no price on this one! Is it still only 60 cents?

Yup!

I wish this were real, too--although Gladiator's presence on the cover reminds me that a matchup of the Legion with the Shi'ar Imperial Guard would be even more appropriate. ("Is it just me, or do those guys seem familiar?") ^_^

(Especially if Little Miss Ankh would let us have Cockrum back to draw it.)

Of course, you've already teamed the Legionnaires with the other Marvel heroes who could be called their counterparts, in terms of time rather than powers.

I've been trying to fill in my collection of 100 Pagers recently, and I love them for the same reason you do. Thank you for posting these every day! They never fail to put a smile on my face.

I loved the Super Spectaculars as well. I was always especially intrigued when DC printed stories featuring the old Quality or Fawcett characters like Captain Triumph, Kid Eternity, Ibis the Invincible and the (archer version) Spider. I also loved stories with lesser known DC characters like TNT and Dan the Dyna-Mite (It was only years later that I got that pun.) It was also in a Super Spectacular that I first read "The Amazing Story of Superman-Red and Superman-Blue". I remember reading once that someone called that the most satisfying Superman story of all time. I couldn't agree more.

Thanks for doing what you do and bringing back so many happy memories.

Talking of the Golden Age, and of Quality and Fawcett, here's a suggestion for another team-up that seems a good fit:

Flying together against the Axis -- or perhaps against a criminal conspiracy of Killer Shark and 'the Shark' -- it's the Blackhawks and Captain Midnight!

Amalgam idea: The Shi'ar Imperial Legion vs. Kang, the Time Trapper (one guy).

Or maybe the dread sorcerer Dormadru?

How about the Spectre and the Hulk vs. the Undying Ones? Or Spidey and the Phantom Stranger vs. the Dark Circle (20th century version)?

Congrats on reaching 1300 Ross! You don't look a day or 1200;)
I know I don't comment as much, but that doesn't mean I don't read Super-Team family on a regular basis. Keep up the damn fine work you do.

Thanks, Dale!

If I can't read about the Swan Legion and the Bronze Age Avengers, I want to read that early-80s Adventure Comics Legion Digest again now!

Appreciated, John!

I'm still hoping to see Pureheart the Powerful vs. Darkseid

Dr. Manhattan vs. the Anti-Monitor?

IIRC, I read somewhere about a fan theory that the mysterious quasi-divine hand Krona managed to get a glimpse of when he tried to see the origin of the DCU is Dr. M's--evolved even further beyond how we saw him in Watchmen--so it would be a case of "No, I will NOT let you destroy the universe(s) I made."
