The New Teen Titans and DNAgents

Even though I wasn't all that familiar with the DNAgents, I thought that it was pretty cool when they had a pseudo-crossover with the New Teen Titans.  This Titans battled a very similar looking team called the RECOMbatants in their comic, and the DNAgents followed suit by meeting up with a team of Titans doppelgangers in their title.  I never did get around to acquiring that side of the team-up though.

I had the Titans issue but not the DNAgents one (issue 14). I only bought a handful of the early issues of the latter book.

I enjoyed DNAgents -- I wonder how it would stand up XX years later.

But even better than DNAgents was the spin-off, Crossfire. Brilliant comic. Seek it out.

As I understand it, the NTT pastiche in DNAGENTS were referred to as "Youngblood" (not to be confused with Bad Rock's group).

Good memory-revival here, Ross. I'd been kind of hoping to see the DNAgents teamed with the X-Men (what with the whole DNA connection between the two teams), but it's nice to see them here at all.

It's almost as cool as would be, say, dropping Jonah Hex into the Land of the Lost (which I really don't think is going to happen here; I only mention it as an illustration). :)

I was a big DNAgents fan back in the day. They always reminded me of the Metal Men more than any other team. You had a group of artificially created humanoids with a brainy leader (Gold/Rainbow), a beautiful woman (Tina/also Rainbow), a friendly muscleman (Iron/Tank), an obnoxious egotist (Mercury/Surge), and a little guy with an inferiority complex (Tin/Sham). The DNAgents also wore "regulators" to keep their powers under control, resembling "responsometers." But the DNAgents didn't have a slow-witted member like Lead, and the Metal Men didn't have a naive innocent who trusts everyone like Amber.

This definitely brings back memories, though they are bittersweet. The RECOMbatants storyline appeared in what was for me, the beginning of a decline in the quality of Teen Titans stories. The Terra saga had ended several months earlier, and although in the (comic shop available only) Baxter Format edition, the Titans were battling Trigon or at war on Starfires home planet, the regular edition of Tales of The Teen Titans seemed to be stagnating. The stories were getting boring for me. In fact, comics in generally was declining in quality, and several months later, as I enrolled onto to campus of my college in northern New England, I was rarely purchasing issues at all. In the summer of 1990, the handwriting was on the wall.

The writing was on the wall as far back as COIE #12.
