Mary Marvel and Captain America

The Shazam! sequel should start production soon and, like most comic book movies these days, it looks to be a jam packed affair.  Besides Billy, there is now a whole family of super-powered heroes to deal with and there has been talk of more villains in addition to the Sivana/Mr. Mind team.  Rumors persist of Superman making a proper appearance this time around as well.  With all of that going on, will there be room for The Shazam character that I really want to show up - Mr. Tawky Tawny?

This cover could be made into a jigsaw puzzle, it's that fantastic. Everything looks to be from the 'proper' 1940s. Cap could even invite Mary to join the All Winners.

Faster than a speeding .....bullet? You can get shell shocked from this cover. Nice to see you called out the big guns.
They were in the background of issue 72 but how about their own first meeting of Mary and Captain Mar-vell? Who's on first?

More likely Mary could invite Cap to join The "Mary Marvel Marching Society".

Another great retro job. It's impossible to see the joins.
But I'm wondering where Cap's Amazon girl friend is. Or maybe WW2 is before they got together? Could Mary Marvel be Cap's first love?
Ross, there's a story or three there waiting to be told (or at least the covers for them).

I suspect that Mr. Tawny will get a proper treatment for quite a while. Animated DC productions have teased him for years, and I don't think he's ever had a speaking role, let alone worn one of those bad suits he was infamous for. Most likely this sequel will contain an Easter egg or two for him, and if he does appear on the big screen it'll be in the third film.

(We also may or may not find out about Darla having a long-lost uncle. That's my own personal theory, anyway. And hey, Kenan Thompson would be a great choice for the role.)

What I'd really like is for Geoff Johns or somebody to come up with names for the "Shazamily." Having Billy go by Shazam is just silly, and impractical in the movie version (he has to actually call out the name, rather than merely say it, in the comics). Why not call him by his actual original name of Captain Thunder? Mary can still be Mary Marvel. In the comics, modern Freddy suggested calling himself "King Shazam," so he could be King Marvel or something. I don't think any of the others have even had a hint of a code-name. (I'd think that Darla would come up with something silly-ish but descriptive, like Purple Lightning.)

In answer to your question, Ross? Probably not.

But, look on the bright side. You have a great Golden Age repro, here! :-)

In fact, this could serve as a prequel to how Cap and Diana first met. The Red Skull kidnapped Mala (Wonder Woman's best friend) from Paradise Island hoping to lure Diana into some death trap or other. But, she was on another vital mission at the time. So, her mother sent for Mary Marvel's help, instead!*

After the successful rescue, Diana comes to Cap in order to personally thank him for helping Mala. And the rest is marital history (to coin a phrase).

*After all, she is one of Mary's patrons

WW was most likely still trying to prove her innocence to Dick Tracy (see STF #2843) at the time of this caper.

Or should that be "Cap-er?" ;-D

Hope all is safe out there. I can say one thing, that your covers are keeping me from getting board with life, they are really being a challenge to me looking for the cover or character from a comic book for the history I'm keeping. The thing I'd really like to say is that I really like when your "mash-ups" are of the Golden Age covers and characters. This one is FANTASTIC.

Thanks, Paul - I enjoy doing the Golden Age covers!

Is that a dress or a kind of romper Mary Marvel has on?

@Anon507: It's the kind of mini-dress chorus girls used to wear, back in the Forties, when rehearsing for group tap dancing.

@Bob G.: "...he has to actually call out the name, rather than merely say it, in the comics."

Is that a recent innovation? In the old days, any mention of the word would transform him. I remember one GA story in which Billy whispered "Shazam" to summon a ghostly Captain Marvel, who helped him pass a test by whispering the answers to him. (It wasn't really cheating. He had to enroll in a college to investigate allegations of football fixing.)

@Other Bob: Yes, it's only since Flashpoint, his using the name Shazam for himself, and the introduction of the three additional "family" members that he's had to "say it like he means it" (paraphrasing the Wizard himself).
