Captain Marvel and Batgirl

I wonder what's going to become of the Batgirl movie.  First it was going to be going straight to HBO Max, then it was decided it would be a theatrical release.  Commissioner Gordon will be played by JK Simmons, as he was in Zack Snyder's Justice League, with Michael Keaton back as Batman.  Keaton's appearance as Batman in The Flash was supposed to come out beforehand and would have explained how is there, but now that movie has been delayed at least a year due to behind the scenes drama.  Are they just going to release Batgirl anyway, and just hope audiences roll with it - or will it be delayed as  well?

Batgirl ran afoul of Ming the Merciless in STF #3535...

  1. Maybe Mar-Vell isn't as worried about the annihilation beam as Batgirl because he knows the Danvers sisters are on the job. Taking care of the deflection for him!

Personally, I don't start worrying about a film's release until they start showing trailers for it in movie theaters. Because, then, I begin to cynically wonder: "How much of these scenes will wind up on the cutting room floor* during post-production editing?"

As for today's cover? Nice usage of Starlin's action art. Mar-Vell's mid-air pose almost resembles a reversal of Dreadstar lunging forward into battle! As in; suitably dramatic. It makes me hope that you can turn this into a trilogy. Like, say, Flash Gordon coming to Earth for a reunion with his grandniece...at her wedding to Dick Grayson? With images utilizing the combined artwork of Phil Noto, George Wilson, and Alex Ross?

*Famous case in point: The original trailers for "Beverly Hills Cop" included a scene where Axel Foley is apparently talking to some Detroit gangster who spent a good number of years in California. Asking him what he (Foley) can expect. And the gangster says "Beverly Hills is a whole other world, Axel." Did that scene make it into the final print of the film? Nope!

  2. What a great and very unexpected pairing of heroes. Another great job!

  3. Oooo! Is Ming becoming a nemesis of Batgirl's in the STFU? I could certainly see her teaming up with the Guardians of the Galaxy, Space Ghost, or even the Spacejammers to deal with him.

@Cary: Bits in the trailer that don't make it to the final cut is frustrating, to be sure. It's one thing when it's done intentionally, such as showing the Hulk instead of Banner in the Hulkbuster armor for Avengers: Infinity War or editing out Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in certain shots for the trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home; but then, in the latter movie, Wong's "Don't cast that spell! It's too dangerous!" was left out, and for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, "Things kind of got out of hand" wasn't said by "Sinister Strange," but instead was attributed to Strange-838 (even though it would've been a beautiful synchronicity to have both).

  4. Great combo Ross! Hmm... The Kree empire being threatened by Ming the Merciless? I dig it! Jim Starlin's Mar-Vell is always welcome here. I think Commissioner Gordon would like him. This Mar-Vell has that infamous Johnny Romita face, but I shouldn't reopen that old can of worms. But I look forward to more of your Gordon Family connections and history.

  5. Somehow I never made the Barbara/Flash Gordon family connection! This is a great cover! I seem to remember the original cover of Batgirl she was saying something similar about you've doomed the world or something. I'm still amazed at your continued creativity in finding the combinations and artwork and story ideas!

  6. The original cover featured Supergirl rather than Marv-ell, yes?

  7. Simreeve - Close - it was Superman

  8. @Ross and Simreeve: Ah, yes! The Metropolis Marvel (as he was sometimes known in the 1970's).

  9. I wonder if the Amalgam Comics version was ever called "Marv-El"?

  10. @Cary: Sort of. The Amalgamated Captain Marvel was William "Billy" Mar-Vell.
