Jor-El could really rock that headband. He's had a lot of looks over the years from John Byrne's futuristic reimagining to Marlon Brando's shiny pajamas, but I still prefer the classic colorful outfit. Plus, it explains why Superman eventually dresses the way he does.
I liked K Callen (as Martha Kent)'s explanation, on the series premiere of ABC's LOIS & CLARK, best.
ReplyDeleteMartha: "At least, they won't be looking at your face."
Clark (scandalized): "MAAAAAAA!"
Martha (laughingly): "Well, they don't call them 'tights' for nothing!"
OK; being serious, now.
ReplyDeleteThis is another one of those covers where word balloons would be unnecessary as the power of the visual portion is obviously sufficient!
Although, for a few seconds, I thought sure that was Argopolis the Silver Surfer's boss was stealing.*
*Hey! If Superman's Kryptonian home town can have a Greek suffix, why not Supergirl's?
Ah, yet another stop of the Galactus World Tour! He's been to Tatooine, Rann, Oa, Mogo, Amzot, and now Krypton... Maybe Bajor next? Mer? Dagobah? Caprica? Gallifrey? Arrakis? Or, perhaps most interstingly of all... Skaro?
ReplyDelete@Cary: My favorite-ever Superman line also came from Lois and Clark, and was echoed in the opening episode of Superman & Lois.
Little Girl: "I really like your outfit."
Superman: "Thanks! My mom made it for me."
Great cover. I love seeing Krypton and, like you, I'm a Jor-El headband aficionado.
ReplyDeleteBut... where's Brainiac? Surely he's not going to let Galactus make off with his trophy?
John Byrne's Kryptonians were clearly based more on the Timelords from Doctor who then the Superman movie
ReplyDeleteOh, this is a great cover! Well done! It also makes you wonder why Galactus is collecting a city.

Another great montage: Galactus-Epic Illustrated #31 John Byrne, Silver Surfer from the Moebius Silver Surfer mini-series from 1989 and the bulk of the cover Ross Andru/Dick Giordano from the cover of the World of Krypton #2. All 70's and 80's all the time.
ReplyDeleteThanks, guys!
ReplyDeletePaul, you know your image sources!
Maybe he's just needing a late night snack!
ReplyDeleteKryptonians would probably be more nutritious than Earthlings, with all that sun-fuelled goodness.
ReplyDeleteWhich reminds me, CaryComic, re your first comment today: Power Girl's explanation of why she didn't bother with a mask was "mostly they're not looking at my face". ;)

Maybe they've done a deal: Galactus collects Kandor for Brainiac, so that the latter doesn't have to worry about possible Kryptonian super-scientific defences, in exchange for the coordinates to several inhabited worlds in which Brainiac is no longer interested?

@Cary and Dave: Split the difference. This could be a new villain. The first amalgam of the Ross-verse: Paulactus!
ReplyDelete@Anonymous: *Boo! Hiss! You're worst pun, yet!*
ReplyDelete@Anon@10:19: Actually, the first amalgam of the STFU is Iron Beetle. (The second is the Spidey-Signal... and I'd love to find some excuse to see both of those featured on the same cover!)
ReplyDelete@Bob & Anon: #Me-2.
