I have always wondered why Stephen Spielberg never tried his hand at a superhero movie, He's worked in so many other genres, isn't against directing adapted material and is a master of using special effects to their best potential, so I think he would be a great fit. The upcoming Green Lantern Corps film would be a perfect project for his amazing talents.
The Hulk has Crossed Paths with Green Lantern Before - They first met in STF #108... Green Arrow was along for the ride in STF #919... She-Hulk and Kilwog joined them in STF #759... and their evil personas clashed in STF #1681...
Spielberg should direct a movie based on Nova. I think the story of a normal boy who finds an alien helmet that transforms him into a space hero would be perfect for him. They would probably use Sam Alexander, but it would be good to eventually work in Richard Rider similar to how they used The Wasp. Rider could have been secret hero in the past who has been missing after a mission. I'm not sure what villain they should use since most of the good cosmic villains are associated with the Fantastic Four. Maybe they could use High Evolutionary.

Maybe if there's ever a big-screen Justice League/Avengers, Spielberg could be persuaded to direct -- especially of Joss Whedon does the script.

Spielberg came close to doing a comic book movie if not a superhero film. He held the rights for a couple of years for making a Blackhawk motion picture. Maybe it was just too soon after the first Indiana Jones film, but he eventually let the rights lapse. Still, it got DC to allow the brilliant Mark Evanier-led run of the comic book to exist during that time!
ReplyDeleteCome to think of it, Spielberg did almost direct a superhero film as he was one of the directors considered to direct Superman 1978. Ilya Salkind actually wanted him to direct, while his father Alexander was skeptical and decided to wait until his film Jaws came out.
ReplyDeleteAfter Jaws became a big hit, the Salkinds offered Spielberg to direct but he turned it down to do Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

ReplyDeleteThe Green Lantern movie was horrible. They should have had a tighter story close to the episode of Superman the Animated Series that had Kyle. The movie should have focuses on Hal finding the ring and figuring out how to use it on Earth by stopping a few minor threats like the Demolition Team. In the second act Sinestro (evil with yellow ring) shows up demanding the power ring. At the end of the movie after Hal defeats Sinestro, some members of the Green Lantern Corps show up to arrest Sinestro and bring Hal to Oa to train in the sequel. I think that would have made a better movie.
ReplyDeleteThe next Green Lantern movie won't be able to do that, but it could follow Men in Black by having John Stewart as a normal guy recruited into a vast cosmic organization he never dreamed existed. The personalities would be reversed. It would basically be Hal as carefree Captain Kirk recruiting John as stoic Benjamin Sisko.
Disagree entirely about Sinestro wearing the yellow ring in first movie.
ReplyDeleteThey choose a good enemy - Hector Hammond - but the whole father of Hector Hammond part was lame.
The GL comic is not a comedy and that was also the problem with the Green Hornet movie, trying to make what it what it wasn't. 'Sorry, I'm late. Help yourself, there's water from the tap!" sums it.
Ryan Reynolds is better in Deadpool because he was given a better script with more appropriate role for him. And the director did not want him and it showed.
I've seen the film and Hammond was not the right villain for the film.

ReplyDeleteSinestro is the best villain so he should have been used first. It was unnecessary to try to slow build his back story when that could have been summed up in a flashback.
ReplyDeleteThe eventual Green Lantern movies will likely draw from the horrible fanboyish rainbow Lantern Corps mess Geoff Johns dwelled on. I don't want to see all those different fruit flavored lanterns. The movie should focus Green Lanterns with yellow powered Sinestro as the only other non GLC ring bearer.
After Sinestro I think Eclipso would be a good villain, using his 90s redesign.
If it weren't for Johns, Hal would still been the Spectre.

ReplyDeleteShazzan was shown in the cartoons as pretty much invincible--once the siblings managed to touch their rings and summon Shazzan, it was over.
ReplyDeleteIf we're going to stay with DC--and since the same company owns both the DC and Hanna-Barbera characters, it could actually happen--I would suggest Darkseid as Shazzan's foe, or at least Trigon or Mordru.
