Groo the Wanderer and Darth Vader
This battle between simpleton and Sith may seem a bit one-sided, but Groo has a way of overcoming impossible odds. It would be a kick to watch their interaction, especially if the amazing Sergio Aragones were to illustrate it!
I thought sure you were going to have a St. Patrick's Day theme for today's cover. Like, say, the Emerald Elite battling Norman Osborn's alter-ego in "The Daring of the Green."
Or, failing that, Judge Dredd getting a power ring from Guy Gardner and then battling the Wicked Witch of the West as the new "Guardians of Emerald City."
Heh heh! Amen Alaric. Maybe someone was using the microwave while the weapons crew was trying to fire their big gun. Anon 11:12 AM, dang it, now I can't unsee that big GL symbol on the Emerald City's main front gate. Getting back to today's cover, just imagine if Conan found a lightsaber. Crom! But Groo has got this. It looks like this Darth Vader was seduced by the Dark Side of the Farce a long time ago. Erin Go Bragh everybody!
ShadowWing Tronix- "I know he used to work for Mad magazine." At the age of, I think, 86, Sergio Aragonés is STILL contributing to Mad Magazine. He recently surpassed Al Jaffee as the single person whose work has appeared in the greatest number of issues of Mad.The first issue containing his work was cover-dated January 1963, and his work has appeared in every issue but one since then.
@ShadowWingTronix: yeah, but it's not the MAD Magazine I grew up with. Real ads instead of spoofs. And available only through on-line purchasing in certain necks of the woods....like mine.
Eng. translation: if Groo was an Imperial storm trooper, Ben Kenobi wouldn't have needed the Jedi mind trick to convince Groo that Luke's droids weren't the ones he was looking for.
hmm i had missed this one, does Groo’s boat sinking affect work in Space ? there’s no way Darth could match Groo’s sword play and it’s doubtful that mind tricks would work on him ( you do need a mind to work on ) so where is Rufferto to save the Day !
What REALLY happened to the Death Star.
ReplyDeleteYou'll get no argument from me on this one, Ross. :-)

ReplyDeleteY'ever notice, when Dorothy and friends arrive at the Emerald City, it looks like there's a Green Lantern emblem on the door?
DeleteWas the Vader on this one already colored, or did you do that work, Ross?
ReplyDeleteEither way, I wonder if there's a character anywhere that Sergio hasn't drawn. You almost could do an otherwise serious Marvel/DC cover using his art.
Already colored
ReplyDeleteDidn't Sergio X get drawn as a Don Quixote-type Jedi in some Magnificent 7 homage (during the original Marvel run of SW)?
ReplyDeleteP.S @ Anon917: pretend that Vader is appearing here as a super-villainous "Sith Lord of the Dunce."

ReplyDeleteAnd Happy St.Patty's Day to you, Kenneth, m'lad. :-)
ReplyDeleteP.S. @ Carycomic: in that case, he'll most likely fall "Flatly" on his face.
ReplyDeleteIs this from Sergio Smashes Star Wars or one of Aragones' other uses of Vader that I'm not aware of? I know he used to work for Mad Magazine.
ReplyDeleteTeam Sergio with Hembeck!! Anybody's guess.
ReplyDeleteShadowWing - it's from Sergio Aragones Stomps Star Wars
ReplyDelete"The kids in Bristol are sharp as a pistol
ReplyDeleteWhen Sergio does the Star Wars Stomp!"
P.S.---that's also from the Michael Flatly album "Sith Lord of the Dance."

ReplyDelete@Anon1112: I just had a mental image of Sergio's Vader spoof walking up to the Emerald City gate, using Force tk on the knocker, and yelling
ReplyDelete"Trick or treat?"
LOL!

ReplyDelete:-(
P.S. @ Carycomic: you're half-right. Sergio X. Arrogantus was the name of the Chief Bad Guy in that now-classic story arc.
ReplyDelete(After Groo accidentally destroys numerous Imperial Star Destroyers)
ReplyDeleteGroo: Did I err?
Vader: I told you not to touch that button! You truly are slow of mind!
(30 minutes later)
Groo: What he mean "slow of mind"?
@Anon508: well, let's face it. Groo makes Bullwinkle J. Moose resemble a rocket scientist by comparison!

Probably playing "Fetch The Stick" with Mark Ruffalo and Janeane Garofalo.
ReplyDelete@Carycomic: you have no shame. Do you?
ReplyDelete@Anon847: none I can apologize for with any sincerity. ;-D
