When a new team of heroes are introduced, it's always hoped that oat least one new member would become a breakout star. New Teen Titans introduced us to Cyborg, Raven and Starfire as well as revamping the near-forgotten Beast Boy into Changeling. All of these new heroes were a hit with fans, not a dud among them. It really says something about the creativity and talent of Marv Wolfman and George Perez that they were able to create so many lasting characters at one time.
Spidey previously met The New Teen Titans in STF #767 and the original Teen Titans in STF #619...
Another great cover. Nice job. How about a Starhawk vs Martian Manhunter or the Elementals and the Fantastic Four?? Keep up the great work…
ReplyDeleteUh-oh! If this "carnival" is a front for the Circus of Crime, our heroes could be in more trouble than they initially thought.
ReplyDeleteEspecially if they're distributing those drugs for The Power Broker!
Awww, yeah - Titans!
ReplyDeleteThat's an Amazing cover, right there! I can only guess that Spidey is leading the Titans on a rescue mission, to free Robin and Changeling...Maybe Speedy and Aqualad, too? Speedy and Spidey - now there's a combination! HA!
Wolfman and Perez sure knew their stuff! Not only did they give us Vic Stone, Koriand'r and Raven; plus a revamped Gar Logan, they amped up Dick, Donna and Wally. They knew, unfortunately that Garth was not going to be part of this new successful team, just as they knew to keep Roy to a minimum. They obviously saw what hadn't worked before and figured out how to zag, where once the team had zigged!
@Air Dave & Cary: actually, both hypotheses might work!
ReplyDeleteThe Ringmaster brainwashes Changeling into joining the carnival (not the first time that's ever happened*). Robin, investigating the recent upsurge in super-power inducing drugs, is also captured when he tries to snap Changeling out of it. Leading to the scene above.
*Remember Teen Titans v. 1/#6?
I would think the green bird between Cyborg and Raven is Changeling.
ReplyDeleteI would also guess the original cover had Robin/Nightwing located where Spidey is located on the STF cover.
Kid, Actually, it was The Protector - I used the cover of one of the New Teen Titans Drug Awareness issues.
ReplyDeleteInterestingly, after an online discussion last night, I started thinking that it might be interesting to have a re-meeting of Starfire and Firestar (first seen together way back in #601).
ReplyDelete@Kid C: If Nightwing had been a part of this cover, I'm pretty sure Ross would've left him in.
That is the kind of cover that brings excitement.
ReplyDeleteAlternatively, Robin might have been captured while investigating some kind of hostile interaction between this 'carnival' (possibly, as already suggested, a front for the Circus of Crime) and Haley's Circus?
ReplyDeleteBy the way, has Spidey ever met the CoC in an actual Marvel comic? I don't recall ever seeing this happen...
(The Avengers as a team did, at the wedding of the Wasp & [Hank Pym as] Yellowjacket; the Hulk did in his own title; various other Avengers have had run-ins with just the Ringmaster, and Cap perhaps also with Princess Python while she was with the Serpent Society. and IIRC the Ghost Rider (Jonny Blaze) met at least the Clown... Who else?)
@Simreeve: He and Daredevil first confronted them in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN v.1/#16. Six issues later, Spidey went up against the short-lived Masters of Menace (featuring the debut of Princess Python).
ReplyDeleteI think she also had a Platonic thing with Dr. Doom not too long ago.

Thank you.

I knew that solely because of Starfire's more modest version of her classic costume.
Since October starts next Saturday, I'd like to make another Halloween-oriented suggestion. Witchfire (Ananym of Limbo) vs. Witchfire (Rebecca Carstairs of Power Company)!
ReplyDelete@Ross: so how come Messrs. Wolfman and Perez aren't listed in the search paramters at the bottom of the text?
ReplyDeleteBecause they did not do art chores on the images I used.
