I was a big fan of anthology comics, whether they included new material, reprints, or a mix of both. They were always a great value, and would sometimes even introduce me to a new character or two. Sadly, they seem to have fallen by the wayside. DC tried a new line of 100-Page Giants for sale in Walmart, but those seem to have been discontinued. I do not know how well they sold, but apparently they have been replaced with comic book 4-packs.
# 3400 Doesn't look a day over #2100 (with Deadpool). Bravo. "Duck, Duck, Ghost" and Ben coming up out of the street with Underdog above him are hilarious! Can't wait to see what you put in the TBP on these issues.
ReplyDeletethis is pretty cool...love it....i would buy this book if i saw it at a comic book store. dc has been doing some 100 page super spectaculars...as they call them anniversary issues...like green arrow 80th anniversary super spectacular...ect i really like those books they are NOT cheap any more $ 9.99 an issue...we will never see the days that those type of books sold at between 25 cents up to $1.00 ( to tell you the truth i miss those days.)comics are NOT cheap any more let's face it guys.

First of all? Congratulations on your 3400th issue! Or cover-sim...or whatever the grammar-nazis prefer you call it. Either way, it's a landmark achievement.
ReplyDeleteSecondly? I love the choice of backup stories you're depicting. Again, there might be some trolls who think a humorous encounter between the Spectre and Scrooge McDuck might be more fitting for Xmas! But, where does it in indicate in the title that the scene in the vault is occurring during the Yuletide season? As for the Punisher vs. Plas; I'd love to read a real-world version of that. I can just imagine the former listening to some of the latter's jokes and explosively shouting: "You're worse than the webslinger!"
Last, but not least: I agree with you considering the virtual extinction of the 100-page Giant. I think it was Robert Frost who once said, "Nothing gold can stay." Of course, the field leader of the Metal Men might disagree with me! But, then again, if he knows so much, why aren't he and the rest of those robots on this anniversary cover?

I take it the Subs have time-traveled to the 23rd century on a vital mission involving the Filmation Trekkers. Which raises the question...are the Vorgons trying to retrieve the Tox U'tat from Risa a hundred years earlier than their first attempt?

ReplyDeleteAs to the future, you did mention how some of those 100-page Giants sometimes held reprinted stories, so maybe #3600 (I wouldn't do this for #3500) can feature some throwbacks to some of your favorite and/or most popular covers.

Normally, I'd have recommended that for Issue #3500. But, if I did the math correctly, that won't get posted till Dec. 7, 2021. And it might be regarded as politically incorrect to have the King of Japanese movie monsters attacking anybody on the 80th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day!

Sure, he was a pirate during the Clone Wars era and a scavenger and swindler during the Imperial Era, but by the time of the First Order he was running Hondo Transport Solutions, a completely legitimate and above-board business with absolutely no connection whatsoever to any rumored illegal smuggling operations.

And I do think that it'd be great to see a Giant-Sized issue with giant-sized characters like Clifford and Godzilla. (Colossal Boy vs. Fin Fang Foom would be a cool inclusion too!)
