Sword of the Atom was an interesting turn in the life of Ray Palmer. On one hand, the mini-series seemed like a 90-degree change in the types of tales I was used to reading about the Mighty Mite, but on the other, it was illustrated by classic Atom artist Gil Kane, lending it an extra layer of legitimacy.
I am always happy to use the artwork of the amazing Ron Wilson, who did the He-Man image here. I was lucky enough to pick up a page penciled and inked by him several years ago:
Ray Palmer had it really, really rough. Sword of the Atom looked kinda cool, in a Warlord kind of way; and then his wife Jean went nuts. I remember reading the final panels of Identity Crisis. I think he went back tot he microverse...
ReplyDeleteSince ur teaming He-man with so many slip in the Haunted Tank. Think of the fun things that could happen then.
ReplyDeleteIs that He-Man taken from Marvel Age Magazine?
ReplyDeleteYup
ReplyDeleteLol! Almost hate to say it. But, they look like they're auditioning for a sword-and-sorcery version of "The Ambiguously Gay Duo" from Saturday Night Live.
ReplyDelete@Horsefeathers: how about BTVS and the Haunted Tank vs. Baron Blood (the original Union Jack's brother)?
ReplyDeleteFun cover, Ross. I wasn't a fan of the Sword of the Atom mini but the art was amazing.
ReplyDeleteAnd, love the Wilson page. I need to get one for my colkection.

Last that I saw of him, which was post-Rebirth, he was till in the Microverse and had found a nice girlfriend there.
How about the Blue & Red Team - Atom, Superman, Spider-Man? An 'ass' whopping for sure?
ReplyDeleteWhen can we get Peacemaker and USAgent?
ReplyDeleteHopefully, it wasn't that Silver Age Wonder Woman foe, Queen Atomia.
ReplyDeleteRoss, no teaming of The Atom and Spider-Man already? Ray and Peter would be a natural. A 'Ray' of hope for those in need.
ReplyDeleteIt seems to me that, with the Microverse in play, Ray would be teamed up with the Micronauts (again).
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand you could always drop He-Man into a higher-education setting, and call it "Masters of the University!"
I was intrigued by Sword of the Atom when it was going, but never got to read it. I think I'll try to run down a TPB this autumn.
On another topic entirely, I just saw the season finale of The Flash, wherein nearly every speedster was brought to bear on the situation, Kid Flash being the main exception. Jessie Quick's tragic absence made me think of her comics father and predecessor, Johnny, who (if tags are to be trusted) has apparently not yet appeared on this blog. So how about it? Maybe he could share a Golden Age adventure with Captain America, or Silver Age with Spider-Man. (My real wish is unlikely: Access merges him with Quicksilver to create Johnny Quicksilver!)
PS: Just for kicks, I'd love to see a photo cover with John Diggle and Luis.
Johnny Quick is in the labels, he's appeared 4 times.
ReplyDeleteThere he is! I was looking in the wrong spot (next to Jonny Quest). But he still has only one appearance other than as a member of the All-Star Squadron.
ReplyDeleteOh, and even better than John Diggle and Luis would be Dig with Alligator Loki.
Or Thor and the haunted Tank vs. Loki!
ReplyDeleteHow about a teamup with Alfred E Neuman and Sylvester Smythe against Obonoxio the Clown!
ReplyDeleteAn unusual team up? Haunted Tank and the Spirit.
ReplyDelete@Horace Feathers: with our luck, he'll bury them in the background of a large super-group shot and claim he's already used that twosome @ such-and-such back issue. :-(
