I am very curious to see how Dane Whitman, The Black Knight, is used in The Eternals. The teaser trailer didn't give much of a hint - he was shown only briefly, wearing contemporary clothing. The movie is expected to span many years, so perhaps there will be at least one scene set in the last with him fully suited up with winged steed and mystical sword in hand. Or maybe that's something we will have to wait to see in a future film.
Rock on! Ross, very nice.
ReplyDeleteMy surprise was that they weren't aiming to shoot him down and call it a 'knight'. The mission may have been just on the Knight alone. Merlin had a lot of trust in him and often felt he was truly a Great Dane.
ReplyDeleteI would've used the title "From Merlin To Berlin." But, that's just me! ;-)
ReplyDeleteSeriously, though: isn't that Nathan Garrett, the super-villainous uncle of Dane Whitman, dressed as the Black Knight? Then, the "Merlin" he's working for must be the 6th-century mutant impersonator who later battled Thor and the X-men.
I do like Cary's title, and given the time period I think he's right about this being Nathan. I also wonder about his steed being black, with bat-like wings; as we've seen in #138, #1598, and #2050, Dane has generally ridden either Aragorn, or his replacement, Strider, both of whom are white with feathered wings.
ReplyDeleteAnd I do hope that we get to at least see Dane's Black Knight armor, if not him suited up in it, in a mid- or post-credits scene. If he actually sees action in it, I think we'll get a better sense of that in one of the trailers as the release date approaches.
What I'll really love is if we get to see him and Valkyrie riding side-by-side in some future production. It won't be quite as cool as seeing her and Aragorn alongside the Shining Knight and Winged Victory in #3181 (for which I again thank you, Ross), but it'll still be pretty exciting.
I wanna see if Dane becomes Sersi's "gann josin" (psychically bonded consort) like he did in the comics!
ReplyDeleteNice cover!
ReplyDeleteRoss, I was wondering... why don't you surprise us sometime with a crossover cover that you have drawn entirely yourself? You have shown us you have the skill and talent. Why not use it?

I haven't put pencil to paper more than a few times in the last quarter century, I doubt I have the chops!
ReplyDeleteNow that is a great great image! Those are two very underrated characters that would make for an interesting team-up.
ReplyDeleteExcellent cover as always. Maybe next time we can get Nick Fury and Amanda Waller.
ReplyDeleteJack-El, they met in STF #1614.

It's been decades since I read the comics concerned, but wasn't he also [retconned as?] the "Merlin" in the origin of Modred the Mystic?
@Simreeve: possibly. He called himself "Merlin" when he awoke from forcibly-induced hibernation* and battled Silver Age Thor. He then changed his name to "Warlock" when he first confronted the X-men. His first rematch with two of them (Iceman and the Beast), he called himself "Maha Yogi." And, since his mysterious rejuvenation following an ill-fated run-in with Dr. Druid and the Hulk, he's sort of come full circle by adopting the alias "Merlin Demonspawn!"
