Superman Vs. Darth Vader (The Movie!)

Somewhere along the line, the properties of Light Sabers seemed to have changed.  In the original movies, they were tough to handle, and would take the use of both arms to properly control them.  Now they seem to be as light as air, with characters doing backflips while using multiple Light Sabers at a time.  The latter style may allow itself for more fancy choreography, but I think that I prefer the former.

Superman and Vader previously met in a more standard comic tale back in STF #1171...

  1. Ha! Epic!
Bottle City of Bespin! That would hint at Brainiac...
Jimmy the Hut?! What is that boy up to now?! More Strange Transformations of Jimmy Olsen!!

Love the cover and ur commentary.
would really enjoy a battle tween Vader & Brainiac. Magic vs collected sciences.

  3. Great match-up. What Superman has always needed is worthy adversaries - and Darth is up there with the moustache-twirling best.
But the cover is overshadowed by what you've surely got coming next - as @AirDave said - Jimmy the Hutt Olsen! I can't wait to see that... (You listening Ross?)

  4. Nice cover, Ross. The placement is so perfect that it actually looks like Vader's standing on top of that car. I especially like how Supes' face seems to be reflecting a bit of the red light from Vader's lightsaber. I'm not sure whether it's something you did deliberately, but it's cool nonetheless.

Among Star Wars characters, I'd love to see Ahsoka Tano, what with her highly-rumored coming appearance on The Mandalorian (Charlie Schneider of Emergency Awesome predicts episode 5). Given Ahsoka's talent for seeing the future, maybe she could be teamed up with Dream Girl.

For "science collectors" (as Horsefeathers mentioned) I'd suggest Brainiac vs. the Borg.

  5. Say, as great as Christopher Reeves was as Superman, I think it'd be kind of nice to see Dean Cain (who is still my favorite Supes) get some love for the role. Maybe he could be teamed up with Xena or some other 90s TV icon (with Martin Klebba as Mr. Mxyzptlk).

  6. EXCELLENT! :-D

Especially since the music from both films synch up almost perfectly.

  7. P.S. @ AirDave and Davejonz: how about Supergirl and Princess Leia having to find a cure for the Kandorian Plague?

  8. @Cary: Well, they would, given they were written at about the same time by the same composer.

  9. Once again, Ross shows his preference for original everything.

I'm not sure that's accurate in this case, though. The very first time we saw a lightsaber, Luke was waving it around like it was the easiest thing in the world, or almost. The difficulty shown by Kenobi and Vader later in the film was chalked up to the fact that they were both old men by this point. Then again, the blade was flat in that first scene, too, so who can say?

  10. As to your thoughts about the lightsaber, someone reimagined the Kenobi/Vader fight from A New Hope: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=to2SMng4u1k

    The action starts at 1:27

  11. Have you ever used George Reeves on a cover? Even as Clark Kent?

  12. @Ross & Newshound Fan: I'd be in favor of that. Maybe as part of a World's Finest homage co-starring Batman'66?

  13. @Bob Greenwade: I did not know that! Thanks for the info. :-)

  14. Alex, John Williams for $1000.
Answer: This composer went from doing themes for Irwin Allen tv shows in the 1960s to composing the soundtracks for some very big budgeted science fiction movies in the 1970s.

  15. @Cary: John Williams has also done iconic soundtracks for several other Lucas and Spielberg films, including the Indiana Jones franchise, E.T.: The Extraterrestrial, the Jurassic Park/Jurassic World franchise, and Jaws... all of which suggests some possibilities for a future John Williams tribute cover (hint, hint).

  16. @Bob and Cary: nor should he be confused with the English character actor of the 1950's who wound up selling Polovitzian dance lessons in the 1970's ;-)

  18. One of Superman's Major Weaknesses is Magic, but if the force is based in science, he shouldn't have too difficult a time of it.
