Joker's Wild in: "Knock Knock, Who's Dead?"

I'm not sure what to make of the upcoming Joaquin Phoenix Joker movie.  It looks like a well made period character piece, but I don't know how much it will actually remind me of The Joker from the comics.  Like Wolverine, the Clown Prince of Crime is a character that works better without a definitive origin story.  I'm not sure if I want to be asked to identify or sympathize with a crazed murderer.  I'm also not sure about Phoenix' look in the role, with applied on makeup that doesn't really match what we know from the villain's classic appearance.  I guess if this is going to be more of an Elseworlds-type tale they can take some liberties.

Joker's Wild first appeared way back in STF #224...

  1. This kind of group could go after crooks just to kill them off. I could see them doing a Royal "flush" on a whole bunch of newbies & veterans alike. But, Mr J leading the team against Green Goblin and Hush would be like taking a gun to a Bomb fight.

  2. Why not? I'm sure that's how most Bat-fans have to regard the Halley Berry version of Catwoman in order to keep their sanity.

  3. Although, the Jokers of Easy Company might've been more appropriate for the 75th anniversary of D-day. ;-)

  4. I'd like to see a Joker/Arcade meeting.
Maybe somebody hires Arcade to put one of the Bat Family into his latest 'Murderworld'?

(Yes, Joker probably ends up killing Arcade... unless Arcade is secretly using a robot proxy there...)

  5. Maybe MLP:FIM's Discord could join the group; his character seem to make the same kind of good fit as Sideshow Bob. Also that's a cool depiction of Sideshow Bob.

  6. Maybe Ben 10's Zombozo and Scooby-Doo's Ghost Clown could be teamed up.

  7. Just in time to coincide with one of the summers most anticipated movies:

  8. The Joker would be a natural pairing with "The Royal flush Gang".

  9. I'm with you on The Joker, Ross. That's one film that I'll probably wait to see on Netflix.

@Simreeve: There's already been a Joker/Arcade team-up; it's Arcade's only appearance here thus far. I think it might be interesting to see Arcade team up with (Anton) Arcane, though; the similarity in names and massive contrast in styles would be fascinating.

@Cary: Regarding Catwoman, you've just solved all but one of the problems I have with that movie. That one remaining flaw is hard to fix from here: the over-reliance on cat jokes.

@emsley: The Joker has been involved with the Royal Flush Gang on more than one occasion -- one of which had him disguising himself as Ace.

  10. Two other things, Ross:

    1. I'd love to see the Lunatic Fringe going up against these guys. I can see how that would be an insane amount of work (pun not intended), so I can definitely understand if we don't get to see it... but the result would be incredible.

    2. I still think we should see the heroic counterpart of this group, with clown superheroes (and heroic or at least honest clowns) such as the Tangent Universe Joker, Astro City's Jack-in-the-Box, Bozo, Pokemon's Mr. Mime, etc.

Oops! And I even commmnted on it, too.
Still, though, I'd like to see it as an actual comic rather than just as a cover here...

  12. Have you done a cover with only sidekicks? You could use Arthur from The Tick, Woozy Winks from Plastic Man, Cryll from Space Ranger, DMan from Captain America, Kato from Green Hornet, Orko from Masters of the Universe, etc.

You could probably make a whole team with just comic relief characters from 80s cartoons (Orko, Snarf, Slimer, Scrappy Doo, etc.).ve you done a cover with only sidekicks? 13. @Simreeve: I'd like to see a Mask/Red Skull comic book story.

  14. How about Catwoman vs. the Beagle Boys? That would be a lot of fun and could be done in a number of ways.

  15. Dude, where did you get that Sideshow Bob image? He actually looks terrifying!

  16. Which Joker? When Batman was in Metron's chair, the chair told him there are 3 Jokers! Surprise, DC seems to have " forgotten that storyline. 3 REAL Jokers? Not even the worse case of split personality could cover that...unless the multiverse is somehow involved.
    I. GOT. IT. There's a Dial "J" for Joker device out there and each new one temporarily replaces the last one. Now that's some juggling act.

  17. Group of good clowns vs group of bad clowns on a ship? Is that a stacked deck?

Definitely agreed on wanting to see both of those.

Some of the details might have got lost from "history" due to either Rebirth or 'superman Reborn', but Batman has mentioned the fact at least once since then.

That's the thing, this was done AFTER rebirth! I want to know where the 3 Jokers are and how there are 3 of them. (Did they kill a fourth one?)

  23. OOOOH! That would be a perfect title for Ross' next cover. A trio of Jokers with the title... "Three Of An Unkind."

Hmmm, I wonder if the chair was including the unknown at the time, Batman who laughs?

Wasn't the incident with Batman in Mentor's chair[slightly] before Rebirth, back when the Justice League still featured the post-Flashpoint version of Superman?

Anyway, the speculation that I've seen elsewhere suggests that those three are the purely post-Flashpoint Joker (the one who had his face removed for a while, and who created the latest version of Harley Quinn), the pre-Flashpoint version (who was involved with the original version of Harley Quinn, and maybe a pre-Crisis version who's basically either the non-murderous clown of the 1950s & early '60s or the murderous but basically-sane master criminal from before that.
After all, we definitely seem to have both the pre- & post- Flashpoint versions of Harley Quinn existing simultaneously nowadays, based in her own title and the Suicide Squad respectively, even though in their case some memories seem to "bleed across" between them. Not only is there the difference in styles, and the one in her own title still being friends with the pre-Crisis version of Power Girl (who shouldn't really exist in current continuity, of course, but seems to have slipped past the reboot anyway...) there's the simple fact that fitting both sets of adventures into a single person's timeline wouldn't work...

  26. @Simreeve: wouldn't that technically be four Jokers? :-|
