The Beetle was another Marvel villain that I grew to really like in the pages of Thunderbolts. I liked his transition to Mach-1 and the effect that pretending to be a hero had on him. Like some of his teammates, he was able to find there was a heroic nature within him after all. I's love to see that story told in the movies one of these days. Another memory of The Beetle is when he showed up on one of Marvel's cartoons (Iron Man I think) and had a strong Liverpudlian accent! That gave me a good laugh.
That is a nice cover of Ted. Ross, have you done Blue Beetle with the Atom vs the Thinker?
ReplyDeleteYou missed a good one here; Dan Garret, Ted Kord and Jamie Reyes versus the villainous Beetle.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ross 1000% when it came to MACH-1 I was/am a huge fan of that run and when they were bringing the band back together under the Winter Soldier's leadership I was stoked, then Marvel dropped the ball AGAIN. Personally I wanted to see him and Songbird together as a couple and liked his leadership in the New Thunderbolts. When Marvel ran that contest to find new talent I submitted a story of MACH-3 and Cardnial turning themselves in and Val Cooper recruiting them for certain missions. He's one I'd like to see more of as a T-Bolt and a relaunch if possible. I can see this cover leading to maybe Abe getting access to Jamie's tech and upgrading a new MACH Armor to be the hero he is.
ReplyDeleteHow about Marvel's Yellowjacket and the Yellowjacket that was in a story in a Mighty Mouse comic.
ReplyDeleteThe first time I ever saw the Beatles on TV was their old Rankin-Bass cartoon, where Paul Frees played the voice of John Lennon.
ReplyDeleteBut, in this case, you have given delightfully new meaning to the term, "Beetlemania." :-)
Also the Incredible Hulk and the Indestructible Hulks (the Robotron video games). XD!
ReplyDeleteHow about the Beatles verses The Beetles?
ReplyDeleteWell, one could always put the three Blue Beetles with the Beatles... in a beet field. Would the Beatles beat the Beetles with beets?
ReplyDeleteThere are rumors of a Thunderbolts movie; at least, a large slice of fandom has been asking for one. I'd been all but unaware of the title before that discussion started, but the more I hear about it the more interested I am. As a movie, I think it'd make for an interesting, if somewhat more straightforward, take on the villain-to-hero journey to contrast the dark muddle we saw in Suicide Squad.
@Anon 8:49: The 1960's Beatles cartoon was done by King Features' animation arm (which by the way also did a BEETLE BAILEY cartoon back then).
ReplyDelete@Anon1159: they might have done the distributing. But, the animation was definitely identical to that later used for the Jackson 5 and Osmond cartoons in the Seventies!
ReplyDelete@Anon251, quick wiki search shows production by King Features Syndicate, distribution by King Features Distribution. 1965-'67. I'm 1968 Yellow Submarine was released, produced by Apple Productions and King Features Syndicate, distribution by United Artists.
ReplyDelete@Phylo and both Anonymice: The Beatles cartoon was partially produced by Artransa of Australia while Halas and Batchelor of London were co-producers on the J5 and Osmond cartoons. If they seem virtually identical in animation-style, it's probably because you saw their joint effort re: the Lone Ranger cartoon done for CBS Saturday mornings circa 1967.
ReplyDeleteNow, can we please bid the "debate" R.I.P.?
