Jonah Hex and Django

Western themed comics were sort of like war and horror comics for me as a kid.  While I was mostly interested in superheroes, I still was drawn to many of the titles.  This was mainly due to the artwork - particularly on the covers, where artists really had some fun.  Jonah Hex had some of the best covers, that ugly face always caught my attention and it was cool to see what kind of mess he had found himself in the middle of this time.

  1. Not bad, Ross. The only way you _might_ be able to top this? Having a time-traveling JH meeting...Judge Dredd!

  2. I really dug the Palmiotti/Gray Jonah Hex series from a few years ago (and the subsequent All-Star Western one). Wish DC would bring that back; those guys really nailed his voice and character.

  3. Jonah's stint in the future is something I don't remember seeing addressed on this blog, Ross, and I think Cary's come up with the perfect team-up for him. Cable or The Doctor might also work, as could any Star Trek or Star Wars persons, but Dredd is someone who would make a great story with Hex.

As you know, Jonah's also made a couple of appearances on DC's Legends of Tomorrow -- one episode in each of the first two seasons, though they skipped the third. I know that fans -- myself among them -- have been eager to see him board the Waverider and have an adventure basically Easter-egging that time in the comic-book version's life. I also think that, given the "magical creatures on the loose throughout history" theme of the current fourth season, it might be interesting to see him dealing with some threat like that in his own Old West setting -- such as, say, a leprechaun.

  4. Re: Bob Greenwade's suggestion: Or maybe Jonah and the Legends have to deal with a were-coyote, who has enthralled the local Indians who think it is their trickster god. Or on Earth-STF, Jonah meets Steve Englehart's Coyote!

  5. Aw, heck, why not just make it the actual trickster god who has to be sent back to Hell? That could make for an interesting quandry, especially for the deeply religious Zari.

  6. I was thinking Jonah Hex meets the Road Runner and a Wile E. Coyote.

  7. Jonah Hex has already met Yosemite Sam....

Now, how about Poison Ivy meets/vs. The Swamp Thing? I haven't seen that combo here, and it seems like a natural (pun intended).

  8. The problem with that, Richard, is that Poison Ivy and Swamp Thing are both DC characters. In fact, I think they probably have met more than once.

  9. @Bob Greenwade: then how about P.I. meets the Man-Thing?

    Talk about macabre!

An elf... an elf with a gun.
    (Remember him from the Defenders?)

  11. @Simreeve: yes, I do. Which inspires me to suggest David Warwick's Leprechaun vs...Pumpkinhead!

  12. Which makes me suggest Roger Rabbit and Captain Carrot. But I'm not sure why.

  13. @Anonymous: to see which of them is more powerful, of course! The good captain...or his Disney namesake having a cartoon-allergic reaction to whiskey.

  14. In retrospect, now that Disney owns Marvel, Roger's reaction to booze would be generically referred to as "Hulking out."

  15. Oh, I see. Roger Rabbit vs. Rodney Rabbit. Same surname. I wonder if they're cousins.

  16. Of course, they are! Haven't you ever heard of...

    ... "rabbit's kin?"
