Currently there are shows or films in production featuring Comissioner Gordon, Batwoman, Batgirl, Harley Quinn, Robin, Alfred Pennyworth, The Joker and Birds of Prey. That's all well and good, but what about the main course - Batman himself? It seems crazy to me to have him off the table while all his supporting characters and villains are getting the spotlight. The same thing seems to be happening to Superman.
Batman and The Beast have crossed paths before on the blog - they shared a retro adventure back in 2011, and first met on a very rough cover from 2010 from when I was just starting to mess around with MS Paint.

The Beast's original transformation? Ah yes, I remember reading and enjoying that story back when it happened.
ReplyDeleteI don't suppose Marvel ever explained the continuity glitch involved, that apparently hardly any time passed in-character for any of their other characters -- including the other X-Men, not just obvious cases such as Franklin Richards -- during the years that it must have taken [even a genius like] Hank to go through university for long enough to gain bachelor's & doctoral degrees?

ReplyDeleteOne wonders if it's Adam Warlock's lycanthropic arch-enemy, rather than the Langstrom Formula, driving Mr. McCoy crazy.
There have been cases of true geniuses getting degrees at very young ages including the equivalent of AP exams but in comics the geniuses are in so many diverse fields. I skipped two years of college myself given credit for college level work at 17. Remember also Hank went to Xavier's institute which was equivalent to high end prep school.

AirDave pretty much nailed it. There's been enough directly on Batman from Adam West to Kevin Conroy to Michael Keaton (et al) to Christian Bale that people know his story all too well, though they're still interested in his world. Superman's been a bit better-paced, with George Reeves, Christopher Reeve, Dean Cain, Tim Daly, and Tom Welling, but that's still a lot. Audiences these days are going to be picky about how Batman and Superman are portrayed, but will be more open to their supporting cast and other lesser-known characters.
ReplyDeleteI do hope that DC can build some TV presence for their Big Three in the 30s, though. It'd be great to see them in the spotlight for their centennial!
Apparently Jean was in college also, as its been ret-conned that she roomed with Misty Knight. Warren was probably working at the family business, Bobby was in Accounting school, and I think Scott was working as a DJ. IIRC, the only time they showed up during the "Lost Years" is when they had been captured and held by one of the Secret Empires over in Captain America. There is definitely room to ret-conn in new characters or adversaries from that period.
ReplyDeleteI've pointed this out before. I know that they're all characters who were already established in the comics, but isn't it interesting that on "Gotham," three of the most important people in Jim Gordon's life are named Lee, Harvey, and Oswald?
