Sgt. Rock and War Machine
I'm not sure why Jim Rhodes is getting so dumped on lately. Not only has he been sidelined in the Marvel films due to the events of Captain America: Civil War, in the comics...
SPOILER alert for those not caught up...
... he has been killed off by Thanos in the Civil War II event! What did the poor guy do to deserve such treatment? Is he too close to Iron Man in nature - that can't be it, they keep creating new Iron Man variant characters. Is his code name no longer considered politically correct? Like with Bruce Banner, I am hoping this "death" is no permanent, as is the tradition in comics.
Take heart, Ross. If marvel can violate their own rules, concerning the "permanency" of Bucky Barnes' death, they can do the same for Rhodey. Heck! They might even bring back Richard and Mary Parker, someday!!*
ReplyDelete*Only, for real, this time.
SGT.ROCK is classic. I always thought that WAR MACHINE was another one of those uninspired creations like VENOM, CARNAGE, RED HULK, RED LANTERNS, etc. where he is just a variation on a more well-known character.
ReplyDeleteI like War Machine. Probably what I really mean is that I like Rhodey. If they created him just to have another Iron Man style character, I probably wouldn't, but James Rhodes was a fully realized character for several years before he got his armor. He was part of David Michiline's spectacular run on Iron Man.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry, Ross, maybe Rhodey will be revived in the next reboot which surely won't be more than six to twelve months in the future....

ReplyDeleteThe only thing I want to know is: how did Rhodey get back to WWII in the first place? Is Dr. Doom trying to change history, again?!
ReplyDeleteRhodey was doomed by having a deep connection to the heads of both sides in the new and improved Civil War. Too bad history says he'll stay dead since I liked Rhodey as much as I disliked War Machine. Just ask Bill 'Giant-Man' Foster. Black versions of original Avengers members don't come back...
ReplyDeleteMaybe Terence Howard could reprise the role of Rhodey in the next movie as...The Freak!
ReplyDeleteAs I recall, there was a Silver Age issue of IRON MAN wherein ex-heavyweight boxing champ Eddie March (professionally known as "Iron Man" March) had become paraplegic. Tony Stark helped Eddie's doctors rememdy that with the use of a machine that had only been used once before...on a critically wounded Happy Hogan.
Unfortunately, the machine had an unexpected side-effect. It temporarily turned Hogan into the Freak. Sort of a cross between Solomon Grundy and the gray-skinned Hulk! Which, of course, made him most un-Happy!! And, needless to say, despite Stark's hopes to the contrary, his technicians had not been able to work that particular bug out of it. Ergo; history repeated itself with poor Eddie.
Personally, I'd like to see a silver screen slugfest between the Freak and the Green-skinned Hulk. Maybe as a result of behind-the-scenes conniving by the Leader!
Does anybody else here remember 'the Brute', a purple-skinned [and highly intelligent, as well as very strong] humanoid monstrosity, who was a form that could be assumed by Counter-Earth's version of Reed Richards?
ReplyDeleteMe-me-me! :-)
