Dr. Fate and The Human Torch
The repercussions of HYDRA's activities were still being felt in Captain America: Civil War, which I watched Friday night. The film, which is more like Avengers 3, was a ton of fun but there was so much packed into it I think it will take another viewing to absorb it all. The opening sequence was fantastic, showing Cap's new team working together. Newcomers Black Panther and Spider-Man (one seamlessly woven into the plot, one somewhat shoehorned in) were a blast to watch and once again The Falcon stole the show for me, now with even cooler moves and Redwing along for the ride. I wish Ant-Man had been given more to do, but I liked his role in the airport battle. It was nice to see Vision and Scarlet Witch sharing time together as well. I still feel like Captain America: Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy are the Marvel movies to beat, but this one ranks high due to so many cool moments even if the story wasn't as strong.
Dr. Fate originally met the Torch in an adventure with the Invaders back in STF #1298 ...
Another WWII Earth 2 hero I was rather glad didn't have a doppleganger on Earth 1, like Hourman, Starman, Dr. Midnite.
ReplyDeleteAnd pretty much any team up with the Torch (potentially either Torch) was nifty. Never understood why his early team ups weren't supposed to have sold as well as Spiderman's. I guess people just bought the books because Spiderman was on the cover.
Actually, Dr. Fate had an Earth-1 double: the Superboy one-time foe Doctor Chaos. Basically, Fate with inverted colors and evil.
DeleteNo doubt, hence why he was a one-shot bad guy.
ReplyDeleteThis installment and yesterday's would have made a perfect two-parter!
ReplyDeleteI can just picture the Man of Bronze having been sent back in time, to the Hyborian Age, during WWII, via the Tower of Fate. Possibly, to destroy the Lemurian Serpent Crown before Hydra get their hands on it, for Baron von Strucker. But, Plan A fails; so Plan B calls for the wartime team-up of Dr. Fate and the erstwhile Officer Jim Hammond!
Happy Mother's Day to all your significant female others. :-)
Great cover. I would love to see the original HUMAN TORCH team-up with the original HUMAN BOMB in some kind of mission behind enemy lines in WW2. Slash and burn!
ReplyDeleteKudos to Bomb and Torch as well.
ReplyDeleteI further support Wolfhammer's suggestion. I think it'd be a great story, and a great cover, if it can be pulled off.
ReplyDeleteSaw a couple on Let's Make A Deal today, he was Uncle Sam, she was Miss Liberty. LOL! Thought about Sam in the Freedom Fighters meeting Miss Liberty from the Force of July.
ReplyDelete@Richard Fuller: I believe they were also the parents of the Inferior Five's Merryman.

Not exactly: That was their Earth-12[?] counterparts from the Freedom Brigade...
