Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was wearing a Black Adam T-shirt at a recent awards show, and it is nice to see him so enthusiastic about the upcoming role in DC's cinematic Shazam! Unfortunately, his casting is still just about all we know about the long-in development project. I hope some movement is made on the film soon, DC really needs some more lighthearted fare on the big screen.
Ha! I've been watching some of the old Saturday morning Shazam cartoons from 1980. Gradually I've grown to like this character more than I did when I was little, and of course Calvin was always brilliant.
ReplyDeleteFor. The. WIN!
ReplyDeleteCalvin and Hobbes should team up with Stanley and His Monster.
ReplyDeleteDwayne Johnson...guest-starring in a SHAZAM movie adaptation? Let me guess. He'll be playing the (ahem!) Rock of Eternity
ReplyDeleteGREAT cover! And I will simply repeat what you wrote: "DC really needs some more lighthearted fare on the big screen." So so true. If this cover were a DCU movie, there's no way any of those innocents are getting out alive.
ReplyDeleteDC's opportunity for lighthearted fare on the big screen can be summed up in two words:
ReplyDeleteAmbush Bug.
Or two other words:
Inferior Five.
And even having Superman meet Mr. Mxyzptlk would be a step in the right direction. Or, give Batman a showdown against the Condiment King! (It'd be a nice diversion from the usual dark stuff with the Joker, Two-Face, Poison Ivy, Bane, Killer Croc, et al.)
Buggy met Deadpool back in #285 (which somehow missed getting a "Deadpool" tag), but it's a pairing I'd love to see again some time. Deadpool and the I5 would be... well, interesting.
I knew it.
ReplyDeleteI actually had a wonderful family member offer me a subscription to DC titles for my birthday and gradually I said discontinue each issue til finally I just told them forget the whole thing. They were awful.
ReplyDeleteI asked if Marvel was this way too and was told yes, it is.
I think I made it to six issues on what titles I can't recall, but one of the last issues I received was Hawk & Dove, before I said forget that one as well.
In the past year or so, I've begun receiving the Scooby Doo team ups (they remind me of the old Scooby movies), Batman '66 and now Batman '66 meets The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
Only good present day books I like.
And I suspect Dwayne Johnson would be playing Ibbac in the Shazam movie.
LOVE today's concept & cover!!!

There's also a Wonder Woman '77 series being released as occasional 'specials', with #3 due soon. They're not bad...
I think that RiChard Fuller and I had a similar journey regarding our comic buying habits. Scooby Doo Team-Up is almost the only regular title I still buy. I still pick up Astro City and Savage Dragon, and I pick up crossover miniseries that interest me. Among the latter is (of course) Batman '66 Meets The Man From U.N.C.L.E. I'm hoping that once that is finished it will occur to someone to do Batman '66 Meets Star Trek '66.... As I've stated on this forum before, I'm also looking very forward to Future Quest.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, Ross, another awesome cover. You've been on a real hot streak lately!
I've also found Scooby Doo Team-up and Batman '66 the only decent new comics out today, Future Quest also looks promising. Still don't like the Batman '66 artwork, but at least the stories are entertaining.
ReplyDeleteI'm always a big fan of anything with Calvin and Hobbes, he's a great one for your team ups! If a Calvin and Hobbes Team-Up comic came out, I would get a subscription! His wild imagination sure fit well with this issue! Good work!
@Richard Fuller: I'd prefer that to him playing Black Adam. He just wouldn't look good in Spock ears!
ReplyDeleteAh, I keep forgetting the differences between Ibbac and Black Adam, tho I'd have to research the characters now.
ReplyDeleteIn the '80s Saturday morning cartoon, Black Adam was tricked into saying 'Shazam' so that when he did, he turned into his mortal form, which was a 3000 year old Egyptian, so of course he turned to dust.
But I do recall a comic book once where Ibbac was tricked into saying his own name, as in "I back down from no one" and he too changed, if I recall correctly.
No, tho I didn't watch the MTV awards (please!), I have seen clips and yea, Johnson is wearing the black t-shirt with the lightning bolt, and that is Black Adam.
@sonofjack: Batman '66 meets Star Trek '66? As you wish.
ReplyDelete@Richard: There's only one B in Ibac. He has the terror of Ivan the Terrible, the cunning of Borgia, the fierceness of Attila, and the cruelty of Caligula.
Maybe he was thinking of Sabbac. Sabbac/Ibac. 2b or not 2b.
DeleteAfter BATMAN V SUPERMAN, I'd feel more comfortable if things were going in an INCREDIBLES / BIG HERO 6 route for the Captain marvel Family mythos.
ReplyDeleteMaybe he was thinking just that.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous and Richard Fuller:
ReplyDeleteHe's portraying the physical embodiment of a STAR WARS card game?!
No light-hearted DC fare? Do you mean we were supposed to take Batman and Superman films seriously?
ReplyDeleteI forgot about Sabbac. In fact, I'll probably forget about him again right after I hit "Publish."
ReplyDeleteMy sister, who doesn't read comic books, but watched things like the Superfriends cartoons and '60s Batman, emailed me nad asked about something in the recent movie. I don't think she realized that fella was supposed to be Lex Luthor.
ReplyDeleteShe asked about a bad guy controlling one of the heroes, I guess Batman. Doesn't matter.
I emailed her back and told her it was a Batman and Superman movie. NOTHING to be taken seriously.
Ricky, Ricky, Ricky:
ReplyDeleteOne should ALWAYS take Darkseid of Apokolips, seriously!
So - does Colossal Calvin pee on a pickup truck, and what make is it?
