The Black Terror is one of those Golden Age characters that I never got around to reading - but I was always intrigued by his cool looking costume. I must not be the only one because now that the character is in the public domain, many a comic publishing company has featured him in their stories. I checked him out in the Dynamite series,
Project Superpowers by Jim Kreuger and Alex Ross and he was pretty cool there.
Love the Classic Superman look!
ReplyDeleteI've been meaning to read Project Superpowers. That's in trade paperback now, right? Can't go wrong with Krueger and Ross!
Nice matching of close artistic styles... this looks like it could have been as actual Golden Age cover!
ReplyDeleteI collected SUPERPOWERS at the time, although sometimes now I wonder why. It could be just the meme that Dynamite's not that great, but actually I feel K&R were squeezing a lot of things into their books that could have been spread out and explored more. Perhaps they were to blame; maybe the Powers That Be weren't confident the books would sell for too much longer, and made them cram it all in. Oh, well...
The pirate motif they gave the Black Terror... I'm not sure if it was inspired, or just increasingly goofy. I loved the miniature bird-girl, The Parrot, he got as a new sidekick by the end, however :)
Yes!!! I've been waiting to see some old Public Domain superheroes in STF! Now if we could just get the Green Lama, I could be a very happy camper. (I think he'd work best with someone like Green Lantern or Doctor Strange.)
ReplyDeleteI like the public domain version of the Black Terror, as well. I know of no other Golden Age superhero who so effectively combined the attributes of Superman and Batman! At best, all others merely replicated the general motif of one or the other.
