One of the great things about Captain America is that he is a character that works equally well in two time periods. His wartime adventures are exciting and truly bring out the soldier aspect of the hero. His present day stories are expand upon those early adventures and show how a man out of time reacts to the struggles of the current era. I loved Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but I would not have minded another adventure set in World War II. The good news is we will still get a taste of that with the upcoming Agent Carter TV series.

ReplyDeleteI read the ENEMY ACE DC ARCHIVES collection at my library awhile ago. A very good series that showed the war from the other guys' side, although it didn't skimp on showing German war "heroes" as nothing but at times. A brilliant strip that extended beyond the kiddie concepts of black and white/good and evil that people have the impression of even today.

Whoops! Evidently, I started writing "nothing of the sort" then halfway through decided to make it "anything but". Just go whichever of the two sounds best.

Neal Adams is a great artist, he doesn't get enough credit for revitalizing DC in the early seventies.
ReplyDeleteI've been reading DC's "Men of War" lately, which featured Enemy Ace as a backup feature. What a great character! Here's a suggestion: how about Snoopy's WWI Flying Ace vs. the Hammer of Hell (filling in, presumably, for the Red Baron)?
