What if Spider-Man had made his debut a few decades earlier? Maybe we would have seen the wall-crawler appearing in some classic movie serials, like the one above. Ah, what could have been!

ReplyDeleteOf course, being a movie serial of the 1930's, that would probably make this the noir version of Spidey. With his twin Colt M-1911's confiscated by Ming minions...and his trench coat and fedora confiscated by Princess Aura!

This works brilliantly - and put me in mind of a Star Trek Voyager episode where the crew mixed with a Ming-like badguy in his black-and-white world?

ReplyDeleteMickey Rooney as Spidey? I would've expected someone more lithe, like Donald O'Connor or Ray Bolger. But yeah, I can accept Mickey in the role.

Unrelated suggestion: How about the Golden Age heroic Catman coming out of retirement to face his villainous Silver Age [onwards] namesake, to reclaim & redeem the name?

ReplyDelete@Bob Greenwade: Mickey Rooney was pretty spry in his younger days. He played the hyper-active Puck in the feature film version of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer's Night Dream." And he could really wail on a set of drums in some of his Andy Hardy musicals! Plus, his father, Joe Yule, was a burlesque comedian back in the early 1900's. So, I'm sure that Mickey (nee Joseph Yule, Jr.) learned some acrobatic schtick from him.
