I had previously featured a battle between these two as one of the back up stories in STF #2400, but I thought that this was a match up that was worthy of its own issue. Doctor Stephen Strange is familiar with having to stave off his own darker side - The end of his last cinematic outing left him doing just that, after all - hopefully it will not be too many years before we see that plot point resolved.
This is a good opportunity to plug my Hulk vs Eclipso team up again. Because i still think there's some potential in those two fighting.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea, Grey Hulk/Joe Fixit vs Eclipso would be interesting too, due to Grey Hulk's transformation due to moon, maybe Werewolf by Night would be affected too.
DeleteI really like this blue caped Dr Strange, i prefer him more monochromatic. I also liked when Dr Strange wore all black with his red cape( in Defenders years ago)
Speaking of Dr Weird, there should be a Dr Odd, and a Dr Normal or a Nurse Normal as a foil to Strange.
[Ross, love seeing Eclipso calling Strange a 'Savior', to me thats a super compliment, its like him saying" Miss, stay away from that superb wonderful hero, he's so handsome and strong, bah'' LOL LOL LOL LOL]
Ross, Great work, one of my favorite covers of your!!!
I like this team-up. Eclipso feels like someone doctor strange would fight. He feels right up the alley of Doctor Strange. If strange can fight Dormammu and Nightmare, he can fight Eclipso.
ReplyDeleteI've only two (unusually non-frivolous) questions, Ross.
ReplyDelete1) Is that woman supposed to be Bruce Gordon's then-fiance' Mona Bennett?
2) Do you think that literal third eye, from "...Multiverse of Madness" was supposed to be an evil organic counterpart to the Eye of Agamotto?
That's a great cover featuring a "natural" pairing. Eclipso was always a favorite of mine. As villains go, he was among the worst because unlike Dr. Doom or Lex Luthor he was without the slightest hint of redeeming qualities.
ReplyDeleteCary: She is whoever you want her to be. Your eye theory works for me.
ReplyDeleteWhat about Dr. Strange vs Dr. Weird?
ReplyDelete@Giiulio: which one? There's the Spectre-like version who belongs to the Round Table of America (from Big Bang Comics). While his super-villainous namesake was a one-shot enemy of the Fantastic Four from a 1960's Little Book.
ReplyDeleteThe one from Big Bang, who resembles the Spectre in some ways.
Delete@Giulio and Anon1009: that Dr. Weird was inspired by Mr. Justice from MLJ Comics (Golden Age predecessor of Archie Comics).
ReplyDelete@Carycomic: Thanks! As for the brunette? It's probably a short-haired Victoria Bentley.
ReplyDeleteP.S.--sorry. That should've read "She is probably..."
ReplyDelete@Anon1219: It's no longer probable. I've positively identified her as VB courtesy of Jeff Snood's UHOTMU website!
ReplyDeleteGreat work, as always, friend!
ReplyDeleteAn unrelated thought that just popped into my head late last night... Calvin and Hobbes with Little Nemo! The latter is a character that's been tragically underused, both on this blog (only two appearances) and in the rest of the world, and Calvin and Hobbes would be the prefect encounter, seeing how they're also powered by imagination! What do you say, Ross?
You'll definitely get mor Calvin covers. Little Nemo - depends on the imagery available and if it would work with Watterson.
ReplyDeleteDitko is back and still appreciated. The Doc reminds me of Richard Boone, especially since the then Strange did do the occasional good deed like Paladin.
ReplyDeleteRoss, if Eclipso 'shined his light' on Nightmare and Dr's other enemies, would it be able to affect them if they're already evil??
Eclipso & Galactus or maybe Firestar & Sunspot.
ReplyDeleteMarvel's Blue Diamond vs Eclipso & his black diamond.
Power Pack vs Eclispo.
The New Mutants vs Eclipso.
Eclipso's ability to create chilling darkness against the blind Daredevil.
Eclipso's demonic facial features seems tailor made for a team up with the Green Goblin at some point & he looks like he's always wearing some type of Venus Girdle famously mentioned in JLA #135 where Queen Clea used one on Blockbuster 1 to control him. Hmmm.
Since Eclipso's origin started in Africa, how about teaming him up with some of Marvel's African villains to fight 2 heroes? The Man-Ape anyone?
Speaking of Man-Apes, I note that you've never featured "Congorilla".
ReplyDeleteI didn't comment yesterday because I wanted to see if anyone else noted the highly clever "mooning over a savior" line.
ReplyDeleteHave a couple of virtual cookies, Ross.
I was wondering if someone would notice, Bob.
ReplyDeletei had noticed ! - cold comedy - i do like that you used the Ditko Dr. strange and from the illustration before he was given the upgraded amulet.. also the Eclipso is also from his early days before they over powered him and kind of ruined the idea that he was some sort of demi devil or minor god with limited abilities.
ReplyDeleteI 2nd a Congorilla cover. he could finally join DC's Global Guardians & meet some other international heroes from other companies.
