Captain Marvel and Captain Marvel in: "The Clutch of Thanos!"
While they appeared together on a whole team of Captain Marvels in STF #1610, I haven't featured these two as a pair since way back in STF #16,over 11 years ago. This is truly a belated sequel to that tale, which also featured Thanos.
One calls the second, Captain, while the second calls the first, Marvel. It's all about control of different energies on hyper levels. Or to put it another way....to make it work, Thanos HAS to be Stoned!!
I'm not sure I can add much more to what's already been said, so far, but I'll try. I agree with the general consensus that this is your best usage of Thanos, yet. He looks way more frightening here, as a purple giant, than he does as a background figure @ STF #16. Because, during the first two seconds I backtracked to that prior team-up, I thought I was looking at MODOK (with Mr. Mind possibly sitting on top of the former's head)!
But, different artists/different styles and all that jazz. Right? :-)
This would surely include a last-minute rescue by the android Captain Marvel.
I personally like to see a cover with Billy and Carol; whether it's a regular cover or a Levi/Larsen photo cover is secondary. (Actually, I'd prefer the former, if it means I can get a Larsen/Benoist photo cover for the "Danvers Twins" movie!)
Great swerve from yesterday's Golden Age to this, with Thanos looking especially threatening.
I completely agree about the Captain Marvel name being the right one for our DC original, but I'm also happy for Mar-Vell to carry it too. (I wish they'd bring him back, the way almost everyone else seems to get returned to the living! Never was a fan of him buying it.)
This seems an especially intriguing pairing to me, and I'd be happy to see them reteam often.
Wow! Such great art, especially the way it blends together so perfectly! Even the light and shadow seems natural! And of course, always great to see the original Captain Marvel here, including with one of his later namesakes!

a quarter of a cookie will do nicely, thank you.
By the way, i LOVE the coloring. Very impressive.
ReplyDeleteAs Edward Jarvis might say: "Mr. Pearsall? I am in awe!"

At the risk of being..."that guy", shouldn't that be "Captains Marvel"? Or is there a difference in usage?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Davejonz. I mean, if Marvel can violate that "Some Must Stay Permanently Dead" rule in favor of Bucky as the Winter Soldier...
