So what is the main reason behind the "no men on Themyscira" rule? Is it simple because the Amazons truly distrust men that much? Is there some kind of ancient prophesy or curse they are trying to keep at bay? Or are they just being arbitrarily exclusionary?
Well, in the pre-Crisis Multiverse, the reason was that the Amazons would lose their immortality if a man set foot on the island. I had to quit comics in 2007 due to the expense, so I don't know if that is the current reason or not.
ReplyDeleteI remember another pre-Crisis story that "revealed" how the Amazons would be mystically compelled to literally kill each other, fighting over any man who first set foot on Paradise Island. Basically, self-genocide.
ReplyDeleteThe reason I recall is close to Cary's, just without the killing part. They'd all instantly fall in love with the guy.
ReplyDeleteAlways hated this version of Diana's costume for some reason; but I have to wonder if Aaron, being a robot and all, would still count as a "man" regarding the curse.
ReplyDeleteAnother brilliant cover, Ross
Hercules screwed it up for the rest of us. Thanks, Herc.
ReplyDeleteGreat creation Ross. - the Goddess’s who created Paradise Island told them no Men…. ( Hera, Athena, Artemis / Diana and sometimes Ghia) and being believers they do what they were commanded by them - all the stories since have been versions of this.
ReplyDeleteThere you go Reg, you called it ;) But rules are rules. And that includes any and all male technology as well. Another great combo Ross!
ReplyDeleteActs of love and care, but for the underdog which was usually a female. What happens if it's a guy that was sickly or had med problems?? Legends create questions.
ReplyDelete@Jared: Diana's own word balloons pretty much answer your question.
ReplyDelete@Bob Greenwade: given how vindictive Hera could be, though, I wouldn't put it past her to make that mass infatuation lead to one big catfight-to-the-death.
ReplyDeleteReply to Detective Tobor:
ReplyDeleteIn New Teen Titans (1980s), Changeling was in medical distress and was brought to Paradise Island for treatment; he was cured, and, it seemed, his powers enhanced by the treatment, but he had to remain on the infirmary bed. He was QUITE upset that he was "surrounded by babes" but couldn't interact with them. Of course, there's nothing to say THEY couldn't climb on the bed with HIM... :)
@Nathan Elke, thanks.
ReplyDelete@Cary: Copy that.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I might be the first to suggest this run-in.
ReplyDeleteLord Pumpkin vs. the Nocturnals?
Or, failing that, I'd settle for Wonder Woman meeting FemForce.
