The Speed Racer movie is one of those films that seems to have gained a cult following after being considered a failure upon its original release. I remember not being crazy about it, but enough time had passed that I thought I would give it a re-watch. Hoo boy, I didn't even make it all the way through this time. The over use of green screen effects was even more garish than I remembered. I still think there's a great Speed Racer movie to be made, but this wasn't it for me.
Given the relative box-office success of the recent Goku movie, here in the States, I don't see why a feature-length anime of Speed Racer wouldn't similarly succeed. And, if not an original story, the Japanese could piece together and rewrite certain episodes from the original series. That procedure certainly worked for the Chinese martial arts spoof called "Kung Pao," two decades back.
ReplyDeleteWell, Speed Racer's dead.
ReplyDeleteWicked cover Ross! After some of the other weirdos Speed has faced, this match-up makes sense. But Racer X could leave an important clue about the Racer family's history to help Speed. And you can bet that Spritle and Chim-Chim will be hiding in the trunk.
ReplyDeleteIf i can't prove my innocence before he reaches me....??yeah, he can go to warp real fast. So much for proving himself innocent.
ReplyDelete@Cary: Worked for the Digimon movie, too.
ReplyDeleteMaybe there's some family history that Pops Racer hasn't told us about?
ReplyDeleteYou got once chance, Speed. Marauder of Team America!

ReplyDelete@Anon327: I assume you mean the Marvel comic book that tied into the Ideal toy line...and not that insipid R-rated spoof of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's ITC Supermarionation series.
ReplyDeleteAs a matter of fact, I do! :-)
ReplyDeleteTeam America--also known as The Thunder Riders--has yet to appear, here.
Anime works best as Anime.
ReplyDeleteI hear the Live-Action One Piece Netflix series is really good, but it's kind of hard to take something slightly inspired by Tom and Jerry seriously.
Chimfather versus Darkspridle!
ReplyDeleteGL Deadpool vs. Darth Zachary, Dark Lord of the Smiths.
ReplyDelete@Anon817: "Oh, the pain! The pain!"
ReplyDeleteI'd like to second another vote for Team America to pop up on here. The black female reminded me of the Teen Titan Bumblebee & Wolf reminded me of Timber Wolf so maybe they could meet a mixed bag of DC heroes that each member of Team A. would have a connection with. Blue Devil's old foe the Roadmaster would be a neat villain to bring back for it. Pretty please?
ReplyDelete^ Also wasn't the Team America members revealed to all join together as the Marauder dude? Sounds like a natural team up choice with DC's Forever People & their combined hero Infinity Man.
ReplyDelete@Anon1139: yeah! Professor X called it a gestalt effect.
ReplyDeleteHow about Black Lantern Ch'p and Marvel Zombie Squirrel Girl?
