Despero's return in the pages of Justice League really took me by surprise. It had been a few years and I had gotten used to the more humorous take on DC's premiere team - and then comes the Despero arc. What was once a standard Silver Age alien villain came back in a way that was anything but humorous! It was a welcome change for me, I was ready for some more serous action - and boy did he deliver!
Groot (after being subjected to the Flames of Pytar): "I--am--charcoal."
ReplyDeleteDidn’t his major upgrade debut during the Detroit League era?
ReplyDeleteHe was nice and sneaky for his debut in Justice League of America #1. Who knew he wouldn't stay a pushover for a chess board. Who knows, his race might still have future changes to go thru that we don't know about...yet.
ReplyDeleteStrong cover.
Next up? Despero vs. Darth Vader!

#my namesake @924: yeah. Otherwise known as "The Laughingstock Era" !
ReplyDeleteI thought it was more during the Justice League International era of the early nineties, I definitely remember seeing him during that!
ReplyDeleteJLD and JLI sort of over-lapped with regard to being needlessly corny.
ReplyDeleteThe change was in the Detroit era. Then came back to Earth, killed Gypsy’s family and went on to battle the JLI.
ReplyDeleteHmmm! That raises an interesting question. What if Judge Dredd teamed up with the Black Racer against Despero and Thanos?

How about Wayne from Wayne’s World and Darth Vader?
Party on, Wayne! Party on, Darth!
The image of Despero on this cover seems tailor made for a interaction with Mephisto or Ghost Rider (possibly with the Champions in tow).
ReplyDeleteHow about Alison Blair and Greg Sanders doing a benefit concert alongside...Darth Brooks?
