Magnus: Robot Fighter and Red Tornado

Not much has been revealed about Superman: Legacy yet, but I hope we get word on a villain for the project soon.  I think that most Superman fans agree that it's high time that Brainiac showed up in the movies.  Just imagine how cool that ship of his would look on the big screen!

Magnus first crossed paths with Red Tornado in a Robo Force adventure presented in STF #2090...

  1. When you see the part of the Superman history that includes 'Superman Lives' with Brainiac as per Kevin Smith's script, you can see how the ship was imagined in youtube. Also, Brainiac's head on a robot spider body like Victor Fries has had.

Counter Programmed- was that for Red Tornado or Magnus? Great concept to alter Magnus a bit and work with Reddy. Going to be interesting to see what Magnus could do against Brainiac.

  2. Maybe Magnus initially thought Reddy had been brainwashed by Etrigan (re: the rhyming word balloons).

In any case, I hope we get to see the entire Robo Force here, again, some day. There was a time they seemed to get together every 1,300 issues (STF #150, STF #1450). And, then, every 400 issues (STF #1850)!

  3. There you go Ross! (*facepalm*) Of course, Brainiac was into electronic infiltration/subversion schemes decades ago, and he even seemed to be a few steps ahead of Ultron. Magnus did take on some giant evil computers in his comic, but they never made any real name for themselves. Who remembers H-8 or Malev-6? Just old geeks like me.

  4. I've yet to see Brainiac presented on even the small screen as the true menace that he has the potential of being. If Superman & Lois was going to stick around (if there's another season, it'll be the last), I'd say it could make up a good season's worth of plot.

As for Magnus, I just realized while looking at this that he's never gone up against the Legion's old enemy, Computo. He'd also fit right in fighting for the Galactic Republic in the Clone Wars. Those are a couple of time-traveling adventures that could almost go back-to-back, or at least one leading to the other (maybe he tried hitching a ride home from the 30th century from someone whose steering is unreliable, such as a certain fellow who travels in a ship shaped like a blue police box).

It might also be fun to feature Magnus in a two-parter with four or five diverse -- and all-organic -- "famous costars," one of whom is secretly a robot, revealed in Part Two to be T-1000 (or some similarly shape-shifting bot).

And I, too, would love to see a return of the original Robo-Force. I have nothing against the second team, but they should be just that -- a second team, Robo-Force II. We could even have a Robo-Force III (or Robo-Force Omega), consisting of Dynomutt, Baymax, Bender, WALL-E, etc.

And... what if Poison Ivy were to recruit the Killer Tomatoes?

  5. Malev-6 was what Death Star 2 would've been like if IG-88 had succeeded in uploading his AI consciousness into the main computer system.

@BG: And what do you mean "old geeks"?!

  6. Sorry, Bob. I meant to say "@KR: what do you mean 'old geeks'?!"

  7. @ Carycomic - my apologies. Bad habit I guess.
Next: Blade Runner takes on Ultron?

  8. I'm an old geek and proudly admit. Oh, how fondly I remember the original MRF from Gold Key Comics! It was still going strong in the post-Bicentennial Seventies when Ideal re-launched their Zeroid robot line as "Star Team." Featuring a reconfigured Capt. Action as "The Knight of Darkness" (imagine Darth Nox with Darth Vader's cape)!

  9. i bought my Zeroids first time around,
Brainiac is probably my Favourite Superman Villain though he who’s name myxipicalic i have trouble spelling comes close,
Red Tornado is a third rank character, I always enjoyed the old Magnet Robot Biter, though i could not have named his foes.

  11. Why not Canberra or Melbourne?

  12. I mean, is Magnus going after an Australian version of Bloodshot? A robopolis, as it were?
