The X-Men Vs. Amazo

Marvel seems to want to slow down and reassess after their Phase Four projects were not met with as much critical and commercial success as their previous phases.  I'm guessing that will push back the advent of  the X-Men in the MCU even further.  That's just for any new versions, though - in addition to Hugh Jackman in Deadpool 3, rumors persist that other members of the Fox X-Men films will be back for one last multiversal hurrah, most likely in one of the next Avengers movies.

  1. This is a great cover. Makes me think this could be a two parter w/ a second part being Amazo vs Mimic and the other Totalitarians being involved somehow. And that's the one thing, of all the group Mimic was the only one who was showing heroic tendencies. I know his beginning wasn't heroic, but later on he proved himself. The group was one of my favorite teams created here. Always wanted to see their return. Of course a X-over w/ the Martian Manhunter would work too after the Manhunter/Super Skrull cover and some kind of history. Maybe a 3 parter w/ J'onn aiding the X-Men

  2. The Totalitarians will return.

  3. I agree with Cavillier. Especially the inclusion of Jonn Jonzz! If nothing else, he could revive his old alter-ego "Marco Xavier" as part of a search for Professor X. The latter could get abducted by the Super-Skrull (who's become the leader of the Z'nox space pirates), for example. Or Amazo has framed the professor by impersonating him. The McGuffin-related scenarios are virtually endless!

Btw: #3900 is now due 12/16/22. I can hardly wait!

  4. Hopefully #3900 will be posted without a hitch - I have concerns it might have trouble getting past the "prove you're not a robot" filter...

  5. @Ross: did Bob Buethe ever get his no-royalties for first suggesting the formation of The Totaalitarians?

  6. This would make for a great "What If...?' story. As in; what if the Mark II Sentinels had been modeled after Amazo?

  7. I dunno about Phase Five "slowing down." There are three movies announced for 2023 and for 2024, but there's a big gap between The Marvels (28 June 23) and Captain America: New World Order (3 May 24). What's happening in the Autumn '23 and Winter '24 slots? Are we really taking a break of almost a year right in the middle of a Phase? Could Sony have the next Spider-Man movie in the works for one of those spots? Or could Universal, at long last, even have another solo film for a Hulk?

We also don't know the course of Phase Six, other than Deadpool 3, Fantastic Four, and the two Avengers movies. If Spidey isn't in one of those Phase Five slots, I rather expect him during that period, and I'm hoping we can get the X-Men at least starting to be a bit more hinted at, if not starting to show up in person. A second Eternals movie is in the works, as is a Shang-Chi sequel, so at least one of those may be a Phase Six movie. There are also some strong rumors of a Young Avengers movie (with so many of that team in place) and a Scarlet Witch solo film, either of which could bring Wiccan and Speed into the MCU for good.

As for today's cover, I think that Anon@10:33 is on to something cool: showing the second-wave X-Men fighting a small army of Amazo-modeled Sentinels would be frightening.

And of course I find the nitpicky details. Amazo is clearly using Superman's heat vision in the original art, reasonably passing in this case for Cyclops's eye beam. But actual Cyclops's eye-beam in this picture is bluish white instead of red. Was that the case in the original art for him?

On a completely different topic, I was pondering yesterday about villains who were originally intended to be one-and-done characters in animated shows, but who were unique enough, memorable enough, and fun enough to capture viewers' imaginations and take on lives of their own. Two particular such characters are the Condiment King and the Evil Midnight Bomber What Bombs at Midnight. A team-up between those two (whether their names are on the masthead, or Batman's and the Tick's) would be epic.

  8. "...Deadpool 3; Fantastic Four..."

Sorta sounds like a football score. ;-D

  9. @Anon706: LOL!

@Ross: I'm making a request for Xmas 2024. Because on November 3, of that year, it will be the 70th anniversary of the original film debut of everyone's favorite Toho Studios daikaiju: Godzilla! So, in honor of that, I would like to request a cover-simulation depicting him on DC's Dinosaur Island. You know; from the recurring story arc known as "The War That Time Forgot" (created by Ross Andru, Robert Kanigher, and Mike Esposito), with artwork by Joe Kubert?

  10. @Anon@7:06: Only if you mean international football, which we Yanks call soccer. I tend to go with baseball, as with "Deep Space 9, Babylon 5" (which would be interesting to see paired here in a baseball context; the former did have a baseball episode, but I'm pretty sure the latter never did).

  11. That Werner Roth art is so nice and clean. 👍

  12. The grey buildings background was perfect for highlighting this cover's art.The heroes are used to very powerful villians trying to do them in, but this is done so quietly, so effortlessly that it adds an extra piece of fear on how simple it might be for Amazo to actually take down one of the team.

  13. @Bob Greenwade: no, I meant the version that is basically the love-child of rugby (and soccer).
