Continued from yesterday's cover, we see that Ghost Rider has joined the fray. This crew has some history together. Johnny Blaze first met Evel Knievel way back in STF #74, they joined forces again to battle Mephisto in STF #376, and later both joined the team Rolling Thunder in STF #1115. Batman and Ghost Rider confronted Mephisto back on one of my very first covers, a lost B&B Tale from 2010.
Here's a peek behind the making of this cover, I needed a lot more flames before I could add the heroes in:
If Batman treats Mephisto like an alien, he might have done a lot of research to find any weaknesses M. might have. Having Dream or Nightmare work with the Bat might add some layers. For that matter, could Mephisto take on Galactus?
ReplyDeleteFun cover tho.
@Ross: a pretty good assemblage (as alliances of necessity go). Maybe next Halloween, Etrigan can take on the Big M.
ReplyDeleteI've been meaning to have those two meet.
ReplyDeleteNo time like the near-future! :-)
ReplyDeleteI was right -- the fourth was indeed Ghost Rider! (Of course, one had only to click on the "Evel Knievel" tag to get a clue.)
ReplyDeleteInterestingly, Mephisto's line seems like it would be more fitting if he was being attacked by the Joker's Wild... which, now that I mention it, would be a bizarrely fun idea.
And why haven't we yet seen Nightmare with Freddy Krueger?
From another angle entirely, with the Ahsoka series coming up, it might be nice to see her appearing here. I'm not sure who would seem like a natural team-up, though; for some reason, Gamora and Buffy the Vampire Slayer come right to my mind.
Any version oh Ahsoka would be nice, although I'd prefer her Padawan self joining the Batgirls.
ReplyDeleteAhsoka and Buffy vs. Darth Andeddu?
ReplyDeleteHow about the ultimate good vs evil with The Confessor and Alter Boy from Astro City vs Mephisto?
ReplyDeleteExcellent theme and layout Ross! Nice conclusion to yesterday. In the future, maybe bring in someone from the Roustabouts or the Bondsmen, and they could be the new Defenders. The motorcycle element had me distracted, but this is a great mix of street level, cosmic level and the occult action. Plus, some of the Outsiders might want a rematch with Mephisto as well.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ken! I figure if a surfboard in Hell can work, why not a motorcycle? If it looks cool, go with it, that's my motto.
ReplyDelete@Jay: How about late-Padawan Ahsoka joining the Birds of Prey? Or even the Legion of Super-Heroes?
ReplyDeleteHi Ross, I was cool with the motorcycles before. I just thought everybody was going to be on a bike for this showdown. My one track mind went down the wrong junction. Smashing cover!
ReplyDeleteThat picture of Hulk in a tux keeps popping out at me. If that issue has a full-length image of that, it might be fun to team him up with James Bond.
ReplyDeleteIt would be funny if this story ends with Jesus saving them (the Jesus who saved Ghost Rider at the end of Ghost Rider's first story arc)...
ReplyDelete@Daniel Frank? Wasn't that eventually ret-conned as some kind of Mephistolean mind game?
ReplyDelete@Dan Frank: I believe Anon256 is right. :-(
ReplyDeleteThis is a very cool cover!
