The Marvel Family and Eternity

With all of the recent movie delay announcements, it was nice to learn that at least Shazam! Fury of the Gods will actually be coming out a little sooner than previously expected. I've liked the brief glimpses that have been shown of the film so far.  The costumes look to be a big improvement over the first installment and I can't wait to see Helen Mirren in a comic book movie.

  1. It's not often that one of your titles actually makes me laugh out loud, Ross, but this one did just that. Nice work overall.

  2. *Slaps forehead, V-8 style.*

"Why did nobody ever think to suggest this before? It's brilliant!"

  3. To be fair, Helen Moreen has already been in at least one comic book movie.

  5. OK, I'll admit it: I'm stumped. Looking at Helen Mirren's pages on Wikiipedia and IMDb, I'm at a loss to identify a "comic book movie" that she's already been in.

  6. Never mind; I got it. RED and RED 2 were based on DC/Wildstorm/Homage comics.

  7. Yeah; very _loosely_ based!

  8. A slightly digressive postscript: just got back from seeing "Morbius."
And, personally, I thought it was great! Jared Leto did an incredibly good job in the title role.* Tyrese Gibson was masterfully understated as FBI Agent Stroud.** And the end credit teasers are already hinting at a sequel that might (repeat: MIGHT) feature Morbius as part of the Sinister Six!

My one complaint? Once again, scenes used in the trailers got left on the editing room floor in post-production. Including that great line Jared Harris had about some cures being worse than their diseases! So, my final score?

    Nine stars out of ten.

*I used to think only Max Maven would be able to play Michael Morbius, given his already innate resemblance to most comic book depictions of the latter. But, now, I'm thinking: "Let him play Moondark the Magician in a Spidey sequel guset-starring Nicholas Cage as the Ghost Rider.

**English translation: he didn't try to steal the show.

  9. Is it true Elmer Fudd will be playing the part of Eternity for the next crossover?
Also, rumor has it that this summer, Eternity, Ego, and Mogo will be leading a family picnic. Hope they have their insurance paid up. May be a long winter.

  10. @Cary: I saw it last Friday. I thought Jared Leto and Matt Smith were both excellent. I thought that the writing was a little forced in a couple of spots; in particular, the last couple of minutes and both mid-credits scenes had a lot of plot holes and questions that will probably never be answered. But the production design (especially the sets) and cinematography were both Oscar-worthy.

And I was annoyed that, other than the Daily Bugle, none of the Spider-Man Easter eggs from the trailers were in the movie. Even Michael Keaton's cameo was different.
