Paul Smith's run on Uncanny X-Men was my introduction to his amazing artwork. I loved his take on the characters, everyone had a sleek modern look while honoring the designs of previous artists on the title. I made sure to follow smith's career since then to masterpieces like Leave it to Chance and The Golden Age. I was lucky enough to pick up a few sketches by Smith many years back:
Nice art.
ReplyDeleteI would have gone with A Toxic Summer. ( even in the middle of winter)
Well, if the title's a pun, it's too subtle for me. That being said, I can see why you admire Mr. Smith's work. His sketches of Johnny Quick and the Golden Age Flash look they might actually have been drawn during the 1940's!
ReplyDeleteYour own comparable skills at illo-manipulation are nothing to sneeze at, though. Whatever has Cyclops glowing like a campfire ember makes him resemble Dr. Solar, Man of the Atom, on this cover-sim!
In short? You've truly outdone yourself for the month. :-)
Not bad! How about, for your next photo-cover, Catwoman'66 meets T.H.E. Catt?
ReplyDeleteIf only to see if Julie Newmar might have better luck seducing Robert Loggia. ;-)
This is an exciting cover; I'd pick it up just to find out how Scott got this way.
ReplyDeleteI think it'd be great to actually use that picture of Johnny Quick, perhaps in a team-up with Captain America or some other Timely hero.
@Carycomic: Speaking of Gold Key characters, how about Magnus, Robot Fighter meets the Jetsons (2017) regarding Rosie the cost-human Robot?
ReplyDeleteI meant CIS-human Robot.
ReplyDelete@the preceding Anonymous: pretty good! But, let me counter with a slight improvement. Rosie Jetson and the Vision meet Wilma Flintstone and Simon "Wonder Man" Williams. With the latter pair proclaiming (in unison):
ReplyDelete"We want our brain and voice patterns back!"
LOVE Paul Smith on the X-Men (X-Factor, not so much - different inker) and Leave it to Chance!
ReplyDeleteHow about Gadzookie and the original Pete's Dragon vs. Fin Fang Foom?
ReplyDeleteI was reading Geoff Johns Flash run this morning. Saw your sketch of the speedsters and got excited. Love the cover and the concept. Could Professor X control Firestorm's mind seeing as it's made of a shared mind? I want to read and find out.
ReplyDeleteCary, not that subtle. Pun on toxic shock.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't trying for a pun, I just thought it sounded like a cool title.
ReplyDeleteI was. A toxic Summer for Scott's name.
ReplyDelete@Ross and Horus Feathers: I thought maybe it might be a pun on "toxic shot." Or something even more intellectual!
ReplyDeleteToxic shock, a.k.a. toxic shock syndrome. Guess you had to live through the 80's/women's health issues to get the pun - I thought it was pretty clever, I was wondering how you came up with it.
ReplyDeleteI really liked Smith's take on Dr. Strange.
Better than Irwin Allen's "strange" take on Dr. Smith.*
ReplyDelete*A sorcerer's apprentice...under Grandpa Munster?!
Cover of the month!
